Devon Achane – 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Running Back – Texas A&M

5’8” 188 lbs

3rd Round – 21st Pick (84th Overall) – Miami Dolphins

Pre-Draft Profile

Devon Achane’s 2023 fantasy football outlook is trending upwards. The Miami Dolphins just became a little faster by selecting Achane, the former Texas A&M standout running back, with the 84th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Dolphins add Achane to a running back room that is lacking talent, which gives him a chance to make an immediate impact as a rookie.

Achane was the feature back of the Texas A&M Aggies in 2022. In 2021, Achane made his mark averaging a staggering 7.0 yards per carry on 130 attempts. After dominating in 2021, he continued to show his skills in 2022, rushing for 1102 yards and 8 touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry. Additionally, he added 36 catches, 196 yards, and 3 receiving touchdowns through the air.

Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy football owners can expect Achane to become a home run threat on one of the fastest offenses in the NFL. With no established running back. he has a chance to establish his role as the top back in a crowded running back room. Furthermore, Achane gets to step into a Shannahan-style outside-zone run scheme where he is a perfect fit.

As a prospect, Achane has some of the best tape of this year’s running back class. He has elite speed and was a track star in high school. Despite being only 5’8” and 188 pounds, Achane has no problem running up the middle either. Additionally, Achane averaged 23 touches per game in 2022, including a 38-carry game against the LSU Tigers. Overall, he has shown he is not your typical small running back.

In terms of fantasy football production, Achane should be expected to demand around 10 to 15 touches per game. His home run speed makes Achane an appealing option, especially in Best Ball leagues. However, his size does limit him as he will never be a true workhorse-back. Additionally, he is not a good pass blocker which could impact his being on the field during 3rd down situations. Furthermore, Achane should be expected to be taken anywhere from round 11 to round 13 in most re-draft leagues.

2023 Projections:

  • 17 Games Played
  • 700 rushing yards
  • 35 catches
  • 300 Receiving Yards
  • 5 Touchdowns

Dynasty Outlook

In dynasty fantasy football leagues, Achane should be considered in the RB3 conversation along with Kendre Miller of the New Orleans Saints. You can expect to draft Achane in the middle of 1QB leagues and at the end of round 1 in Superflex leagues.

Overall, He projects as a running back who will demand around 40% of the carries and always be a home run threat. His long-term fantasy ceiling should be considered a top 20 fantasy football running back. On the other hand, his floor should be considered that of someone such as teammate Raheem Mostert. Overall, Achane is a great fit for Miami and should provide a nice spark in the backfield.
