Dynasty Football Sell High Candidates: Pre-NFL Draft

The name of the game is buy-low, sell-high, but identifying who are the players to buy-low and sell-high isn’t always easy though. Well in this article, I am going to discuss some players that I feel are sell-high candidates as the 2022 NFL Draft approaches. These are players whose value is currently high but I believe will decrease significantly very soon and now is an opportunity to get a big return for them. As always, no this doesn’t mean to just go out and sell them for the sake of it, but you might at least consider putting them on the block.

Jalen Hurts

Last year, Jalen Hurts finished 9th in total points and 6th in average points per game in just 15 games played. A big part of his fantasy success last year came from running the ball where he had 784 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Hurts was not as successful in the passing game throwing for only 3,144 yards and just 16 touchdowns while managing to complete only 61.3% of his passes which ranked 27th in the league.

Hurts was a much better fantasy quarterback than a real-life NFL quarterback. He just hasn’t shown that he’s a good passer and I am not confident that he will be a starting quarterback for long in the NFL let alone the Eagles. The Eagles’ trade with the Saints allowed them to move one of their 2022 1st-round picks to 2023 which I believe they will use along with their pick to move up and go after a quarterback.

Elijah Mitchell

One word: Shanahanigans. It has been a running back carousel in San Francisco for several years. The 49ers hadn’t had a 1,000+ yard rusher since Frank Gore all the way back in 2014. Not only that, but they’ve had a different leading rusher five straight seasons. Elijah Mitchell was a 6th-round pick in the same draft the 49ers took Trey Sermon in the third round. Mitchell also dealt with a handful of injuries, including to his finger, knee, rib, shoulder, and head(concussion) which caused him to miss several games.

Mitchell also was not used much in the passing game only having more than three receptions twice as well as having more than 20 receiving yards just twice. This leads me to question if Mitchell can remain the lead running back, if he can stay healthy, and if he can increase his role in the passing game. I would rather sell and let someone else take on that risk.

Dalvin Cook

Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and Dalvin Cook getting injured. Cook has had a long list of injuries dating back to college. He suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder twice as well, once back in college and once in the NFL. A torn ACL, a groin strain, shoulder sprain, shoulder dislocation, multiple hamstring injuries, and multiple ankle injuries. When healthy, Cook is incredibly productive and one of the best running backs in fantasy but the keywords are when healthy. Cook has missed at least two games every season since entering the NFL and only finished as a top 12 running back just twice, largely thanks to his many injuries.

Now with Cook turning 27 before the start of the season and with the injuries piling up, I am not sure his body will hold up much longer. Also with a new head coach, the offense could look different and move to more of a passing offense. I would look to get out now because this time next season I could see his value plummet.

Cooper Kupp

I get how selling Cooper Kupp after having one of the greatest fantasy seasons of all time might seem crazy, but hear me out. Kupp will turn 29 in just a few months and his value will never be as high as it is now. Many dynasty rankings you’ll see right now have him as a top-three or five wideout. He has only finished as a top 24 wide receiver twice, has only had two seasons with over 1,000+ yards, and just one season with 100+ receptions. Last season Kupp had 51 more receptions and nearly 800 more yards than he had in any other season for a stat line of 191 targets with 145 receptions for 1,947 yards which are incredibly unlikely to be repeated or even come close to doing so.

Last year the Rams were also dealing with injuries at running back with Cam Akers out for nearly the entire year with an Achilles tear and Darrell Henderson missing multiple games. I highly recommend exploring trading Kupp and seeing if you can get a massive haul for him.
