Dynasty Rookie Profile: Chris Olave

Coming out of Ohio State, wide receiver Chris Olave is frankly one of the harder receivers to assess in this 2022 NFL Draft class. Put him on most college football teams and he is a clear number one receiver. Ohio State, however, is not most college teams. They have significant wide receiver talent at the moment, including Olave and Garrett Wilson in this draft, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. in future drafts. That depth of talent makes it hard to stand out. Olave recorded the third-most receiving yards for Ohio State this season, behind Smith-Njigba and Wilson, but led the team in touchdowns with 13.

I think that speaks towards his skill set. In my opinion, Olave is the best route runner of the three receivers, making him a dangerous target in the red zone, and a constant intermediate threat. What is going to be interesting to learn at the NFL Combine is Olave’s pure speed. If Olave can post a solid 40-yard dash time, he will immediately move up my draft board.

Why? Similar to my take on Garrett Wilson, I think Olave’s route running skills could lead to opportunities to beat secondaries over the top, leading to the big-play ability that is often so attractive at the wide receiver position. In fact, in some ways, I wonder if Olave’s route running masks his burst, because his burst is not the primary way he beats defenders. Olave aims to beat you off the line by changing direction on routes. If he then transfers that into a double move off the line followed by a quick burst down the field over the defender, we’ll start seeing that big play opportunity that we sometimes missed at Ohio State.
