Running Back – UAB

5’11 215 lbs

Strengths

McBride runs with the kind of reckless abandon you have when Mario finds a star. Kendre Miller and he are easily the two most violent runners in the class. He keeps his pad levels low and drives through defenders.  He runs downhill and is quick to pick a running lane. McBride is best as a one-cut running back. The initial burst through the hole is one of the fastest in the class. Finally, shows great speed as well in the open field, outrunning safeties, and most opposing corners.

Weaknesses

Agility is a nonfactor after the first cut for McBride. If he loses his initial momentum being caught up in traffic, he struggles to restart his momentum and make a play. Questions will arise about the level of competition he went against. Also, a question of many of his broken tackles were poorly attempted arm tackles, rather than shedding due to personal strength rather than opponent technique. While he is useful for screens and swings, his lack of agility makes him a nonfactor in the passing game downfield.

NFL Draft Capital and NFL Fit

Efficiency and productivity are hard to ignore when you look at McBride. He led the Nation, rushing for over 1,700 yards and 19 touchdowns, averaging 7.4 YPC. The Doak Walker semifinalist accomplished this in only 12 games. His low usage during his freshman year helps keep him well below 500 carries for his collegiate career, so his legs remain fresh.  His weight and relatively clean injury history are sure to stand out also to scouts. McBride has the tools to be a three-down back in the league.

For NFL Draft capital, McBride absolutely should be a Day 2 pick but may fall into early Day 3. If that is the case he should be taken around the end of the first round in rookie drafts. He profiles very similar to Dameon Pierce That being said, if he would have been part of the 2022 class, I’m confident he would be the third back taken. In this 2023 class, he is more likely the 5th to 7th running back off the board. If McBride doesn’t get the recognition or draft capital, I would still recommend using a second-round pick on him, as I believe he will thrive, when given the opportunity.
