Dynasty Rookie Profile: Josh Downs

Wide Receiver – North Carolina

5’10, 171 lbs

Strengths

Faster than fast, quicker than quick, Josh Downs is pure speed. He has a terrific change of direction, leaving defenders on skates with relative ease. His small stature isn’t shown in his playstyle. He has a great vertical jump that we’ll see at the 2023 NFL Combine. He uses that along with proper timing and extension to remain a threat on contested catches. Downs has a surprisingly large catch radius, all things considered. This along with his display of defender leverage makes him a fun weapon for any quarterback to have. He is a big play on the way after he has the ball, using his abilities in space to maximize additional yards.

Weaknesses

Size limits Downs’ potential roles at the next level. He has a series of smaller issues, to a concerning level enough that he is less of a weekly lock than others in his class. Also, he doesn’t do as well against more physical corners when engaged downfield. Finally, he needs more film against press coverage to get a better idea of how he handles those releases.

NFL Fit and Draft Capital

Downs projects as a slot receiver at the next level and a YAC machine. He may not be an instant impact receiver, but he’s a lock for the ‘Sophmore Breakouts’ list next year. If you can take Downs in the early second round of your dynasty rookie drafts and show patience, he will absolutely make you feel all the smarter for it. As for the NFL Draft, I’ve heard late 1st to 2nd round for him.
