Tight End – Notre Dame

6’4, 249 lbs

Strengths

Coming out of Notre Dame, Michael Mayer is the No. 1 tight end prospect and is a top 15 overall prospect by many. He burst on the scene as a freshman with 42 receptions for 450 yards and two touchdowns. After that, he put up with 800+ yards in both his sophomore and junior seasons. He has great hands and is a very reliable target in the passing game. This year, he had five games with double-digit targets and three games with over 100 yards.

Mayer has great size and the ability to box out defenders which makes him a treat in the red zone. He showcased this against USC on one of his two touchdown receptions. Furthermore, he is very versatile and can line up inside as well as out wide. With his size and ability to run a wide variety of routes, it makes him a matchup nightmare for defenses. Finally, is a well-rounded tight end who is not afraid of contact and is a very solid blocker.

Weaknesses

When looking over Mayer’s weaknesses it is more or less nitpicking as he doesn’t really have any glaring weaknesses. Mayer is very well-rounded however he doesn’t possess elite speed or athleticism. He could improve on creating separation at the catch point. Also at times, Mayer appears a little sluggish coming out of his breaks.

NFL Draft Capital and NFL Fit

Mayer looks to be a lock for the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He has everything NFL teams look for in a tight end. NFL teams see the advantage of having a tight end like Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews, George Kittle, and Darren Waller. He will likely go in the early to middle of the second round in your dynasty rookie drafts.
