As we approach the third week of the MLB season, there have been significant injuries, especially to the pitcher position. Spencer Strider, who experienced discomfort in his elbow, will be out for the season after getting UCL surgery. Shane Bieber and other starters had their seasons cut short due to injuries. There is no clear answer yet as to what’s causing these injuries, with some blaming the pitch clock and others attributing it to players throwing 100mph+ velocities.

However, the show must go on. Today, we will help you identify some options to add to your roster in the pitcher position and many others. Stay with us as we identify players to target weekly for your roster to help you win a fantasy baseball championship.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups – Week 3

As we move through the season our main goal is to identify players that don’t have a high percentage of ownership, particularly on FantasyPros. We will ensure that no player is rostered more than 40% in leagues to ensure that most of the guys listed are available. Additionally, we will also make sure to have at least two players listed that are owned in 20% or less for deeper leagues. With that, let’s jump right into our Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 3.

Gavin Sheets (1B/OF/DH – Chicago White Sox): 3%

Sheets is 27 years old and has been in the majors since 2021. In a deeper fantasy baseball league, he is a player you should take a look at. Notably, he is getting consistent playing time for the Chicago White Sox. In fantasy baseball roster flexibility is huge. Additionally, Sheets can be started in most leagues at first base and the outfield. If your league has a corner infield position he is eligible to play there.

Furthermore, Chicago’s ballpark is known for being very friendly towards hitters, which is great news for his performance. He currently ranks 11th in the league in on-base percentage (.455) among players who have at least 20 plate appearances. Additionally, he has a season slugging percentage of .704, with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.

Esteury Ruiz (OF – Oakland Athletics): 32%

Ruiz was a highly drafted player in fantasy this past March. This guy stole 67 bases in just 132 games last season as a rookie. Unfortunately for him and many fantasy managers, he was sent down to Triple-A after just 3 games this year. This move from the team seems like it was not due to his inability to play on such a low-talent A’s roster, but more because of player service time. Sending him down to the minors for 2 weeks will push back his free agency by a year and reduce his arbitration value. In the minors, he’s slashing .429/.375/.857 with 7 steals. He is expected to be called up within the next month.

Brandon Marsh (OF – Philadelphia Phillies): 21%

Marsh has been one of the most impressive players in baseball to start the year. He is 13th in slugging percentage(.628) in 43 at-bats. There were concerns that he would have to share a lot of playing time with Johan Rojas, the young and promising center fielder for the Phillies. However, Rojas hasn’t been performing well at the plate, so the team has been assigning Marsh to play in left field on days when Rojas starts in center. In addition, Marsh who bats lefty has been starting more against lefty pitchers this season. He has been the best hitter in the Phillies lineup to start this season. I would look to acquire him in a deeper league if he is available.

Alec Marsh (SP/RP – Kansas City Royals): 8%

First off, no, Alec Marsh and Brandon Marsh are not related. They just happen to conveniently be two players that I like to add this week. Marsh got touched up a little bit against the White Sox allowing 3 runs on 8 hits over 5.2 innings while still earning himself the win. Not to mention, he plays behind one of the better defenses in baseball who also showed some pop on offense.

Furthermore, over two starts, Marsh is sporting a 3.09 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP. Keep in mind, he is not a player with overpowering stuff. However, I was impressed with his outing against Baltimore earlier this season. If you are looking for some wins I think he could be of some value to you.

Ranger Suarez (SP – Philadelphia Phillies): 33%

Suarez has had a phenomenal start to his season. He has appeared in 3 games this season with a total of 17 innings pitched. While Suarez is not known for throwing a lot of strikeouts in a season. However, so far he is averaging 6.3 a game giving him a 30.16 K% on the year. On top of that, he has a 0.71 WHIP, 2.65 ERA, and 2 wins.

Furthermore, this Phillies team should win a good amount of games this season and we hope Suarez is on the receiving end in the stat category. He is also lined up to start against Colorado in week 3 at home which is a more than favorable matchup for the left-hander.
