Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 13
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire
In fantasy baseball, the waiver wire is a list of players who are not currently on any team’s roster. Players are added to the waiver wire when they are dropped by a team, or when they are free agents who have not yet been claimed by a team.
To add a player from the waiver wire, you must submit a waiver claim. Waiver claims are processed in order of priority, with the team with the highest waiver priority getting the first crack at the player. If multiple teams submit waiver claims for the same player, the player will be awarded to the team with the highest waiver priority.
As we head towards the end of June, we are a just few weeks away from the All-Star Break, which begins on July 7th. Unfortunately, we just got a week where we witnessed two potential major injuries. Shane McLanahan left Thursday’s start with back issues, and Bryan Reynolds is now on the injured list with a back injury. The McLanahan news is rough, he is the SP1 right now in most formats and has been a true ace. In the end, we’ll need to see the extent of the injury, but at least the Rays seem optimistic.
Waiver Wire Pitchers
Gavin Williams, SP, Cleveland Guardians
Gavin Williams was the big call-up this week by the Guardians. With the exception of Grayson Rodriguez and Eury Perez, Williams is one of the top pitching prospects in the game right now. In his debut versus the Athletics, Williams pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs while striking out four batters.
Unfortunately, he got rocked in the third inning, but outside of that hiccup, he pitched very well. Williams is a must roster the rest of the season based on talent alone. Looking ahead, his next start is against the Royals and then the Cubs.
Braxton Garrett, SP, Miami Marlins
Braxton Garrett has been pitching very well of late. On Thursday night he struck out 13 Pirates and allowed one earned run over 7 innings pitched. Garrett currently has a 3.64 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP and 90 strikeouts in 76.2 innings. The 13-strikeout game came out of nowhere, and Garrett is a great option if you need to replace Shane McLanahan. Also, he lines up to face the Red Sox and Cardinals next.
Emmet Sheehan, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
Odds are, Emmet Sheehan may not be on your roster in a deeper league. If he is, then he needs to be rostered. In his first career start, he threw 6 no-hit innings striking out three batters. For now, he seems to be sticking in the rotation and will face the Astros next. He is then set to face the Rockies and Pirates. If he gets past the Astros, he has a very favorable schedule despite going to Coors Field.
Bryan Woo, SP, Seattle Mariners
Bryan Woo just came off a victory at Yankee Stadium. He threw 5.1 innings allowing two hits while striking out five. He has pitched four starts and has 25 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. Furthermore, his ERA is inflated from his first start at Texas, but since then he has not allowed more than two runs in a given start, and most recently struck out nine White Sox, and seven Angels. Woo has a high ceiling as he has shown, and needs to be rostered if you have the space open.
Jordan Hicks, RP, St. Louis Cardinals
Jordan Hicks seems to be the go-to closer with Ryan Helsley out. Hicks has 49 strikeouts in 31.1 innings and hasn’t allowed a run since 6/11. In fact, in 16 of his last 18 appearances, he has not allowed a run. Hicks has been reliable of late despite an above 4.00 ERA. While he is seeing the save chances, Hicks is a must-roster if you need saves.
Scott McGough, RP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Scott McGough might have become the top candidate for saves in Arizona. He pitched for a two-inning save on Wednesday. Additionally, he has not allowed a run in 14 of his last 15 appearances and currently has a 2.50 ERA. Notably, he has 47 strikeouts in 39.2 innings of work, and a 0.78 WHIP. Needless to say, McGough has been playing great and is worth considering as a waiver wire option.
Waiver Wire Hitters
Henry Davis, C, Pittsburgh Pirates
The former first pick of the 2021 MLB Draft, Henry Davis, made his debut this week. He hit his first career home run and more importantly, is seeing time in the outfield. This means he has everyday playing time for a player with catching eligibility.
Overall, Davis is a great addition if you’re looking for upside. Especially in two-catcher formats. Despite the .167 average, Henry makes for an excellent long-term addition to your fantasy baseball teams.
Maikel Garcia, SS, Kansas City Royals
Do you need speed? Maikel Garcia is a great option. Garcia is batting .287 with ten steals, two home runs, and 17 RBIs. He stole three bases against the Rays on Thursday and was well-known for his speed in the minors. Now it appears he is given the green light, and makes a great deep league middle infield option.
David Hamilton, 2B, Boston Red Sox
Another speed option coming up from the Red Sox is David Hamilton. He may not be an everyday player right away, but he is known for his speed in the minors and stole a base immediately this week upon getting called up. With Pablo Reyes possibly seeing the injured list, Hamilton could be in line for expanded playing time.
Jake Fraley, OF, Cincinnati Reds
Jake Fraley has not seen full playing time, as it appears he is in a platoon, but his numbers have been very good this season. Fraley is batting .270 with nine home runs, 44 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases. His rostered percentages are down across fantasy platforms, and that should not be. He needs to be rostered in more formats despite not playing every day.
Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinatti Reds
Joey Votto was a favorite of mine years ago in all of my drafts. Lately, questions have been brought up about his future in Cincinnati and in the MLB. However, he answered that by coming back this week and going on a hot streak. As I typed this, Votto smashed a three-run home run against the Braves. Before this game, he already has a home run and three RBIs and is hitting in a red-hot lineup.
Overall, Votto is not a must-add right now. However, if he keeps up the hot bat, he’s worth a look in your deeper fantasy baseball leagues.
Yainer Diaz, C, Houston Astros
Wrapping this week’s waiver wire column up is Yainer Diaz. He has been gaining steam and is becoming a must-look in two catcher formats. With Yordan Alvarez on the injured list, Diaz has been seeing time at DH, and his bat has been good. He is currently batting .277 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs. While Diaz is seeing everyday playing time, he becomes a great addition in those deeper formats.
