Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 16
Top Waiver Wire Pickups
In fantasy baseball, the waiver wire is a list of players who are not currently on any team’s roster. Players are added to the waiver wire when they are dropped by a team. Either that or when they are free agents who have not yet been claimed by a team.
Furthermore, to add a player from the waiver wire, you must submit a waiver claim. Waiver claims are processed in order of priority, with the team with the highest waiver priority getting the first crack at the player. If multiple teams submit waiver claims for the same player, the player will be awarded to the team with the highest waiver priority.
The All-Star break has come and gone, and we are into the heat of baseball season. In our fantasy baseball leagues, waiver wires are thinning out, and some call-ups are occurring. The biggest and most notable was finally seeing Christian Encarnacion-Stand get his big league debut, and hit a home run with his first major league hit. If CES is on your waivers, he’s a must-add. Let’s get right into the top waiver wire options for the week.
Waiver Wire Hitters
Edouard Julien, 2B, Minnesota Twins
Edouard Julien is back up in the majors and is putting up some respectable numbers. For the season, he has 9 home runs, 16 RBIs, 2 stolen bases, and is batting .318 with a .394 OBP. Between 7/17 and 7/19, he went 8 for 11 with five runs scored, two home runs, two RBIs, and three walks. While he may not see everyday playing time, especially against left-handed pitchers, Julien is a very intriguing addition while on this hot streak.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 3B, Cincinnati Reds
CES is finally here. How will the Reds fit him in their lineup? He may not see everyday playing time right away but his long-term approach is worth it. His first major league hit was a home run. CES has 3B eligibility and it’ll be intriguing to see how the Reds get him consistent playing time.
CJ Abrams, SS, Washington Nationals
The likelihood of Abrams being available in a deep league is low, but Abrams has been having a nice season so far. He is up to 18 stolen bases on the season and is batting .254 with a .302 OBP. Additionally, he has eight home runs and 36 RBIs on the season. I believe he has the potential to steal 30 bases this season.
Mickey Moniak, OF, Los Angeles Angels
Mickey Moniak has been doing the most with his extended playing time. He is batting .331 on the season on 157 at-bats. Furthermore, he has 11 home runs to 33 RBIs with 3 stolen bases. So long as Mike Trout is out, Moniak will see consistent playing time.
Chas McCormick, OF, Houston Astros
Chas McCormick has been red hot as of late. He is batting .286 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs. Additionally, he has 10 stolen bases. He’s been red hot since the all-star break and appears to be earning more playing time. Overall, here is an excellent addition in deeper formats where you start 5 outfielders.
Waiver Wire Pitchers
Logan T. Allen, SP, Cleveland Guardians
Logan T. Allen returned to Cleveland this week and threw five scoreless innings and only allowed a hit while striking out eight batters. Next, he lines up to face the Royals and White Sox next making him an excellent streaming option going forward. On the season, he has a 3.21 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 67.1 innings. Allen should be your top priority as far as pitchers go on the waiver wire this week.
Kyle Bradish, SP, Baltimore Orioles
Kyle Bradish is having a great season. He has a 3.05 ERA on the season and nine quality starts. In his last six starts, he has not allowed more than two runs scored. Additionally, he has 87 strikeouts in 91.1 innings and has six wins. Next week, he lines up with a tough schedule ahead with Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, and Toronto. Despite the tough schedule, Bradish is an excellent pickup in any format this week.
Nick Pivetta, SP, Boston Red Sox
Nick Pivetta is a pure speculative pickup. He did not start this week against Oakland but followed the opener. Additionally, he struck out 13 batters in six innings and did not allow a hit. Unfortunately, it’s uncertain what his next step is. But as of now, he lines up to face the Mets and Giants next. His ERA of 4.44 is not a great sign, but he does have 94 strikeouts in 75 innings.
Michael Lorenzen, SP, Detroit Tigers
Michael Lorenzen has not allowed a run in his last three starts (18.2 innings), and that alone is impressive. It brings his ERA to 3.49 and now has eight quality starts on the season. Furthermore, he lines up next against the Angels and Miami Marlins making him a good streaming option in both.
Aroldis Chapman, RP, Texas Rangers
Acquired in a trade, Aroldis Chapman has looked like a different pitcher this season. He is now the co-closer with Will Smith, and it’s only a matter of time before he takes the full-time role. Chapman has a 2.04 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. Furthermore, he has three saves on the year and is a must-add if you need closer help.
