Welcome back to another edition of fantasy football metrics that matter. This column dives into all of the stats and data generated for fantasy football. More importantly, it gets rid of all of the noise and misleading numbers to highlight the fantasy football metrics that matter for success. On a weekly basis, I’m going to highlight a few players who might surprise you with how well, or how alarming they are performing in these metrics. Using this, you can get ahead of your competition for Week 11 and beyond. These are some of the fantasy football metrics that matter as we head into Week 11.

Can Rachaad White be the Secret Ingredient to a Championship Run?

It hasn’t felt great to be a fantasy manager leaning on Rachaad White in 2023. After all, White scored single-digit fantasy points in four out of the first five games of the season. But since Week 7 he’s scored double-digit fantasy points every week, has been a Top-16 running back in all four weeks, a Top-12 running back in three out of the four weeks, and was the RB1 overall in Week 9.

The stuck-in-wet-cement slow start means a lot of managers have a bitter taste sensory memory when it comes to White. However, since then he has snuck into the Top-10 in terms of Consistency Score with a 5.03 CS, and Top-12 in terms of overall fantasy points at the position.

Targets, Targets, Targets

A primary driver of White’s recent success is a big uptick in passing game usage.

Over the first five weeks of the season, White was averaging 3.4 targets per game, 17 in total. Additionally, he scored 45 fantasy points in 0.5-PPR formats, averaging nine fantasy points per game. Over the last four games, he’s seen 20 targets, or an average of 5 per game, which ranks fifth most at the position during that time span. Furthermore, he has racked up 70 fantasy points for an average of 17.5 a game which ranks sixth highest among all rushers.

If you’ve been following me on social media, or reading this column weekly, it should come as no surprise that a big-time uptick in targets has led to the resurgence of White’s fantasy value. The table above shows, clearly, how much more valuable a target is for fantasy production than a rush attempt, regardless of scoring format. So when targeting running backs, it is vital to see what kind of involvement they’re getting in the passing game. Clearly, White has made himself an integral part of the Tampa Bay passing game.

Volume is Still King

That old adage hasn’t changed. We just now know that targets weigh far more heavily in that volume equation. But I wanted to bring it up with White because he has zero competition for that volume behind him on the depth chart.

Unlike teams like the New England Patriots, and Pittsburgh Steelers who have multiple backs playing different roles and getting opportunities, not to mention the hot mess that is the Baltimore Ravens running back room… Clearly, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem to really only trust White.

In the 10 games played so far in the 2023 season, White is dominating the Buccaneers snap count with 84% and 72% of the opportunity share. All three guys behind him on the depth chart, added together don’t even constitute a real threat. Unfortunately, rookie Sean Tucker has hardly even been active this year. With White getting this much volume, and high-quality volume with the targets, he has one of the safest floors of any running back in fantasy football right now.

Finally, with the fantasy football trade deadline looming ahead of Week 11 in most leagues, and the bitter sensory memory managers have from the start of the season, Richard White is a perfect “trade for” candidate. In the end, if he can lock down an RB2 or Flex spot on the start roster moving forward, he could be the key piece to a lot of championship rosters for 2023.
