Julio Jones Signs with Tampa Bay – Fantasy Football Impact

The fantasy football community is buzzing with the news that veteran wide receiver Julio Jones signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a one-year deal. Jones has been a popular target late in best ball drafts with an average draft position of 200+.  That will be a thing of the past, because now that he’s signed his ADP will certainly rise.

Jones has 13,330 receiving yards and 61 career touchdowns since being drafted in the 1st Round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He’s reached the Pro Bowl seven times and has been highly regarded as one of the best wide receivers in recent memory. From 2014 to 2019 Jones finished as a WR1. That’s six-straight seasons where he’s finished at absolute worst as the WR7 in PPR leagues. There’s no doubt, that he’s an absolute stud, but he’s 33 years old and has two straight seasons now that have been cut short due to injuries.

Redraft

I’m interested in Jones at his current draft price in redraft leagues. He’s a talented receiver who may still have something left in the tank and surely wants to add a Super Bowl to his resume. His one-year prove it deal is largely incentive-based and Jones simply has nothing to lose.

Tampa Bay is a high-volume passing offense and there should be plenty of targets to go around. Jones put up career lows last season in 10 games played. He had 31 receptions for 434 yards and just one touchdown. He has missed seven games in each of the last two seasons, so health is a big concern for the 33-year-old wide receiver. When healthy, I expect low-end WR3 production from Jones. Certainly don’t expect a ton out of him and temper your expectations, but when he’s healthy he should be worth starting as a Flex option. That being said, if Chris Godwin is really healthy for Week 1, don’t expect anything consistent from Jones.

Dynasty

If you have Julio Jones on your roster, it’s the perfect time to sell Jones. He’s 33 and his best seasons are far behind him. This could be his last hurrah with Tampa Bay. It’s a one-year deal so who knows if he decides to retire after this season or which team would sign him. I would put him on your trade block and see what kind of offers you get for him. There are likely some other teams out there that think this is great news and would buy Jones as a win-now piece.
