Lamar Jackson 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
Just four seasons ago, Lamar Jackson was the NFL MVP and the fantasy football league winner. However, in the last two seasons, Jackson did not finish healthy and missed five games in both seasons.
Fantasy football managers have a “what have you done for me lately” mentality, and forget just how dynamic Jackson is for fantasy football purposes. For the first three weeks of 2022, Jackson was the QB1 with 34.7 points per game. In perspective, Jalen Hurts finished the season as the QB1 with 25.6 points per game. No, Jackson’s hot start was not sustainable for an entire season. However, it certainly shows you what he can do in fantasy football.
In this article, we tell you why Jackson can be THE QB1 overall in 2023. Right now, Jackson is the QB5 in our 2023 fantasy football rankings.
Fantasy Football Outlook for 2023
There has been plenty of change this offseason for the Baltimore Ravens as we finally saw Jackson sign a long-term contract. After that, Todd Monken was hired as the offensive coordinator. Then, rookie wide receiver Zay Flowers was their first-round draft pick. Finally, veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was signed from free agency.
Overall, it is expected that Monken will significantly change the offensive scheme compared to Greg Roman’s run-heavy offense. Roman was the offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022. This was the Baltimore Ravens’ pass attempts during Roman’s tenure:
2022 – 488 (28th in NFL)
2021 – 611 (9th)
2020 – 406 (32nd)
2019 – 440 (32nd)
Jackson has dealt with injuries the last couple of seasons, but when he is healthy he is still a stud. Per Fantasy Points data, Jackson was 2nd in quarterback rushing with 63.7 yards per game. That is 6.37 points, which is more than a touchdown! Jackson is still a cheat code for fantasy football. There is a narrative that Jackson is not a good enough passer. Needless to say, that is simply a false narrative. These stats are all from Fantasy Points data for 2022:
5.8 Hero % (4th QB) – percent of attempts QB makes an extraordinary throw that maximizes the result of the play
0.65 fantasy points per dropback (3rd for all quarterbacks).
In 2019 when Jackson was the MVP, he scored 28.1 ppg (2.5 ppg more compared to Hurts last year). He was throwing to Marquise Brown, Miles Boykin, Willie Snead, Chris Moore, and Mark Andrews that season! The wide receivers this season have plenty of question marks, but they have plenty of talent too!
Our consensus Faceoff rankings for Jackson have him as QB5. Based on the last couple of seasons that is fair. However, Jackson is capable of being the QB1 thanks to his rushing upside paired with his new offensive weapons. According to FantasyPros consensus ADP, Jackson is the QB5 off the board behind, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, and Joe Burrow. Ultimately, Jackson is capable of outscoring all of them so gain the extra value by drafting him as the QB5 in your leagues.
Dynasty Football Outlook
Overall, Jackson is still a stud for dynasty fantasy football purposes. He signed a long-term contract with the Baltimore Ravens, and the front office is finally making an effort to improve his weapons. Situational stability is a significant value in dynasty fantasy football then you pair that with Jackson’s talent and age.
It may sound crazy, but Jackson is currently the QB7 in our Superflex dynasty startup ADP! Additionally, Jackson is just now coming into the prime of his career at age 26. Certainly, there is always a risk with a running quarterback for injuries. However, this is football and every player has a risk of an injury.
If you are in a Superflex dynasty startup then try to get a mid-first-round pick to target Jackson. We all know, quarterbacks are gold in Superflex leagues. However, I am still targeting to acquire Jackson. He is worth at least two first-round rookie picks plus a player or another pick.
