Luke Schoonmaker – 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Luke Schoonmaker - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Tight End – Michigan

6’5” 251 lbs

2nd Round – 30th Pick (58th Overall) – Dallas Cowboys

Pre-Draft Profile

Displaying a solid combination of size and speed, Luke Schoonmaker is built to be the proto-typical modern NFL tight end. With high draft capital and the absence of Dalton Schultz (Houston), the former Wolverine is in an excellent position for long-term production.

Schoonmaker is now the third Big 10 tight end alongside Jake Ferguson (Wisconsin) and Peyton Hendershot (Indiana) on the Cowboys roster. The Big 10 conference is no stranger to rolling out pro-level tight ends with athletes like T.J. Hockenson, George Kittle, and Maxx Williams, to name a few.

A very balanced tight end, Schoonmaker is a willing blocker and an accomplished pass catcher. He hauled in 35 receptions in his final year of college, averaging 11.9 yards per reception. Furthermore, his above-average body control will allow him to turn plays of five or six yards into 10+ yard plays with his size and strength adding another yard or two at the end.

He turned in a 40 time of 4.63 at the combine, making him very quick for the position. Additionally, he is also highly versatile as he was used all over the field. Even making plays out of the backfield at times.

Fantasy Football Outlook

Schoonmaker was selected by the Cowboys, a team in need of a talented tight end. With Dalton Schultz signing to the Texans, a rookie seemed the way to go to fill the position. Schoonmaker could line up as the starting tight end for Week 1 this year.

Another talented pass catcher should do well with Dak Prescott and the Dallas offense. Putting another solid target onto the field for short and intermediate passes puts Schoonmaker in position for early success.

For redraft leagues, this rookie tight end is worth a late-round dart throw that has some great upside. After CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, Schoonmaker makes a reliable third option on passing plays.

Dynasty Outlook

In one of the most talented tight end draft classes that I can remember, Schoonmaker didn’t get a lot of hype going into draft weekend. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have what it takes to hang with the bigger names. The Cowboys’ solid offensive line will give plenty of valuable opportunities for Prescott to connect with his new teammate.

In your upcoming dynasty rookie drafts, look for Schoonmaker in the late third to the early fourth round. There’s potential for him to get meaningful work in year one as he continues to hone his craft and become a solid contributor for years to come. All in all, this is a solid long-term landing spot that could translate to dynasty fantasy football success.
