Bills Receive: Nyheim Hines

Colts Receive: Zack Moss, conditional 2023 6th Round pick (could become 5th Round pick)

During the craziest and most prolific NFL trade deadline that I can remember, Nyheim Hines joined the AFC front-runners for the upcoming Super Bowl. Entering the league in 2018 as a 4th Round pick, Hines immediately found success as a pass-catching running back. In each of his four full seasons, he’s caught at least 40 passes and twice caught at least 60. He has also never missed a game in those four seasons.

Before the start of the 2022 campaign, Buffalo tried to acquire a number of different pass-catching runners such as J.D. McKissic and Chase Edmonds. There is clearly a plan in mind for the Bills’ offensive strategy and Hines seems like just the kind of player they’ve wanted all along.

Alongside some added draft capital, the Colts add the prospective Zack Moss. Having never found much of a groove in Buffalo, the former Utah standout gets a new start and potentially more opportunities with his new club. Moss has seen very limited action this season with only 17 carries and seven receptions. He is, however, averaging 5.4 yards per carry this year. Moss has some decent receiving chops of his own. He hauled in 23 balls at 8.6 yards per catch in 2021. A change of scenery often does wonderful things for people.

Fantasy Football Outlook

We should see, fairly quickly, how much of an impact Hines will have with Buffalo. We know from this previous offseason that there was a considerable desire to bring in a running back who could excel at catching balls out of the backfield. I see Hines being utilized immediately in positive ways, especially in run-pass option plays that will take advantage of Josh Allen’s running ability. Hines gets a steady bump up in fantasy terms with his new team. He should definitely be rostered in all PPR-scoring leagues. This move also cripples James Cook’s fantasy value, for the time being, taking away virtually all fantasy value in redraft leagues.

There’s not a big move of the needle for Moss at this time, but he is a possible candidate to take a significant chunk of pass-catching duties in place of Hines. We should definitely take a couple of weeks to watch how the Colts use him. He likely doesn’t have much value in fantasy until something develops with his production. You should also hold tight to your dynasty shares of Moss as anything is possible for newly acquired assets in the NFL.
