Redrafting The 2021 Rookie Class: Round 3
With the NFL season ending last night, the off-season is officially in full swing! This is the perfect time for dynasty managers to start looking forward to next season and their rookie drafts. Before we proceed to the 2022 off-season, let’s look back and correct the 2021 rookie draft. I’ll be going through each round, and Redrafting The 2021 Rookie Class.
Rules for this 3 round redraft: I will be making these picks as if it was a PPR, 1 Quarterback league. Let’s dig right into the third round.

Round 3
3.01 Trey Sermon
RB 49ers 23 y.o.
Trey Sermon left everyone who drafted him severely disappointed this past year. Many believed that Sermon would end up taking this backfield from veteran running back Raheem Mostert at some point in the season. Sermon ended up only starting two games this season. Head coach, Kyle Shanahan opted to use 6th round rookie, Elijah Mitchell as his bell-cow running back over Sermon. Optimists can hope that the 49er’s plan with Sermon is to pair him with quarterback Trey Lance when he most likely starts next season. If Sermon continues to not see the field next season, he would be a complete bust and probably droppable in most dynasty leagues.
3.02 Terrace Marshall Jr.
WR Panthers 21 y.o.
Much like the last pick, Terrace Marshall Jr. was a popular sleeper pick this season and ended up disappointing everyone. Between poor quarterback play and injuries, Marshall was only able to record 17 receptions, 138 receiving yards, and zero touchdowns. Marshall looks to get another opportunity next season in the slot. If the Panthers can fix their stagnant offense, Marshall could bounce back.
3.03 Khalil Herbert
RB Bears 23 y.o.
Khalil Herbert showed strong flashes that he can be a very good running back in the NFL. Herbert took over the backfield when David Montgomery went down with an injury. During Montgomery’s four-game absence, Herbert had 78 carries, 344 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown. When Montgomery returned, Herbert fell back into the backup role and received only a few touches per game. Herbert is a good hold and will be an RB2 if Montgomery were to miss time.
3.04 Zach Wilson
QB Jets 22 y.o.
The Jets took talented BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the second overall pick. Wilson was named the starter from day one. Wilson had an up and down first season in the NFL. The rookie quarterback put up 2,334 passing yards, nine passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. While the stats don’t look great, Wilson showed flashes of his potential with four games where he scored at least 17.5 fantasy points. If Wilson can progress and be more consistent, he could be a very solid fantasy quarterback for many years.
3.05 Brevin Jordan
TE Texans 21 y.o.
Brevin Jordan got off to a slow start this season as he made his debut in Week 8. In only 25% of the team’s offensive snaps, Jordan caught three passes for 41 yards and a touchdown in his pro debut. Jordan was up and down the rest of the season in limited play. He finished the season with 20 receptions, 178 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns. Jordan showed promise in his rookie season, and with how shallow the talent is at the tight end position, Jordan could develop into a quality starter or streaming option.
3.06 Kyle Trask
QB Buccaneers 23 y.o.
This pick might be a surprise, but with the recent announcement of Tom Brady retiring, the door opens up for the former Florida quarterback. If the Buccaneers decide to retain their important free agents, such as Chris Godwin, Leonard Fournette, and Rob Gronkowski, it would set Trask up with all the weapons he needs to succeed. If Tampa Bay does indeed bring back these important weapons, and Head Coach Bruce Arians returns, Trask could be a sneaky sleeper for the 2022 season, that is if the team doesn’t bring in a veteran quarterback.

3.07 Jaret Patterson
RB Commanders 22 y.o.
Jaret Patterson had a very quiet season as he was in a reserve role behind starter Antonio Gibson, and change of pace running back J.D. McKissic. In Week 17, Patterson got his opportunity due to Gibson and McKissic both being injured. Patterson produced 57 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown on 12 carries, while also catching all 5 targets for an additional 41 receiving yards. In total, Patterson scored 20.8 fantasy points in Week 17. Patterson could elevate himself into the change of pace role next season due to McKissic being a free agent. If McKissic were to depart in free agency, Patterson might find himself a solid role in Washington.
3.08 D’Wayne Eskridge
WR Seahawks 24 y.o.
The Seahawks selected Dwayne Eskridge in the second round of the NFL Draft. Eskridge had a very uneventful first season with the Seahawks. Plagued by injuries and lack of playing time, Eskridge only recorded 10 receptions for 64 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. Eskridge did show some promise in his four carries, running for 59 yards. Hopefully, a full offseason in the NFL will help Eskridge get on the field and produce more next season. Eskridge’s value is a wait-and-see kind of situation.
3.09 Davis Mills
QB Texans 23 y.o.
With all the controversy surrounding Deshaun Watson, the Texans selected Davis Mills in the third round of the NFL Draft. Many wrote Mills off before he even got the chance to play. Mills had a surprising season finishing with 2,664 yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Mills had his fair share of bad games, like in Week 4, where Mills had negative four fantasy points and tossed four interceptions. Mills also had some impressive performances such as Week 5, where he diced up a Bill Belichick-coached defense for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns. The rookie passed for 300+ yards in 4 of his 11 starts.
3.10 Dyami Brown
WR Commanders 22 y.o.
It was a disappointing season for rookie receiver Dyami Brown. Brown finished the season with 12 receptions for 165 yards and zero touchdowns. Brown started the season as a starter for Washington. After Week 7, Brown only had one more start and only played in 34% of the snaps. If the former North Carolina receiver can develop over the offseason, he could find his way back into a starting role.
3.11 Tommy Tremble
TE Panthers 21 y.o.
Tommy Tremble did not have a very productive rookie season for the Panthers. Tremble finished his rookie campaign with 20 receptions, 180 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. Tremble also had 3 carries for 11 yards and a touchdown. While Tremble was not very productive, he started in 11 games this season. Tremble will most likely be the starter for Carolina next season.
3.12 Tre’ McKitty
TE Chargers 23 y.o.
Tre’ McKitty had very little playing time this season, recording only six receptions for 45 receiving yards. This pick is more about the potential for future seasons, not taking in what he did this season. Starting tight end, Jared Cook is a free agent and is likely to leave or retire. If Cook leaves, 83 targets will be up for grabs. McKitty would have to beat out undrafted tight end Donald Parham for the starting job for this pick to make sense. With Justin Herbert at quarterback, if McKitty were able to get a hold of the starting position, he could be a valuable tight end for seasons to come.
After finishing this exercise, I once again come to realize all the uncertainties in the NFL. Players can really surprise you, such as Elijah Mitchell and Amon-Ra St.Brown. On the flip side, players can also leave you severely disappointed, like Trey Sermon and Terrace Marshall Jr. I also realized that even after one season in the NFL, some players are still tough to project. The entire third round of this draft is pretty close in value, one could argue for any player to be a little higher and it would make sense.
