Redrafting The 2021 Rookie Class: Round 2

kadarius-toney-giants-redrafting-the-2021-rookies

With the NFL season ending last night, the off-season is officially in full swing! This is the perfect time for dynasty managers to start looking forward to next season and their rookie drafts. Before we proceed to the 2022 off-season, let’s look back and correct the 2021 rookie draft.  I’ll be going through each round, and Redrafting The 2021 Rookie Class.

Rules for this 3 round redraft: I will be making these picks as if it was a PPR, 1 Quarterback league. Let’s dig right into the second round.

Review Round 1

Round 2

2.01 Kadarius Toney

WR Giants 23 y.o.

It was not the best rookie season for Kadarius Toney. Injuries riddled the rookie receiver’s season as he only played in 10 games. On the bright side, Toney’s potential is through the roof as we saw in Week 5. Toney posted a stat line of 10 receptions for 189 yards in only 54% of the team’s snaps! If the Giants get consistent quarterback play, watch for Toney to be a valuable asset for years to come.

2.02 Pat Freiermuth

TE Steelers 23 y.o.

Pat Freiermuth had a very solid season for a rookie tight end. Historically, rookie tight ends are not fantasy-relevant, the 2021 class proved otherwise. Freiermuth finished the season as the TE13. The rookie tight end recorded 60 receptions, and 7 touchdowns this season. There is a question mark at quarterback for the Steelers next season which might hurt Freiermuth’s value.

2.03 Trevor Lawrence

QB Jaguars 22 y.o.

The first overall pick in the NFL Draft was Trevor Lawrence to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lawrence and the Jaguars did not have a very enjoyable season, to say the least. The team dealt with controversies with their now former head coach Urban Meyer. The lack of talent around Lawrence did not help him either. The former Clemson quarterback still possesses immense talent and potential to be a QB1 for years to come.

2.04 Rhamondre Stevenson

RB Patriots 23 y.o.

Rhamondre Stevenson had a solid year for the Patriots. Stevenson recorded 606 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns in his rookie season. The backfield was crowded this season with touches being split by Stevenson, Damien Harris, and Brandon Bolden. Stevenson, who was listed as the team’s backup running back to starter Damien Harris, actually had more carries from Week 10 on. If Stevenson can continue this trend he could put up low-end RB2 numbers next season.

2.05 Rondale Moore

WR Cardinals 21 y.o.

After a scorching hot start to the season, Rondale Moore was soaring up rankings! After posting 24.4 points in Week 2, Moore slowed down drastically. The Cardinals rookie receiver only posted double-digit performances two more times throughout the season. Moore is still a freak athlete who ran a 4.29 40-yard dash. The potential is still there for Moore to be a valuable dynasty asset.

2.06 Trey Lance

QB 49ers 21 y.o.

The 49ers traded a haul of picks to select North Dakota St product, Trey Lance. Lance sat behind starter Jimmy Garrapolo for most of the season. Lance did fill in for a hurt Garrapolo in two and a half games. In Lance’s two starts he put up 14.58 and 19.06 points. Lance came in and played half a game when Garrapolo went down mid-game and proceeded to put up 20.38 points. The 49ers rookie has the potential to be a fantasy cheat code with his rushing ability. Once Lance gets the opportunity to start, look for him to be a fantasy superstar at QB.

2.07 Kenneth Gainwell

RB Eagles 22 y.o.

The Eagles selected running back Kenneth Gainwell in the 5th round in the 2021 draft. Gainwell had an impressive season in limited opportunities. Early on in the season, it looked like Gainwell had already carved out his role in the Eagle’s offense. From Weeks 1-4, the rookie saw 19 carries and 18 targets. After Week 4, it seemed that Head Coach Nick Sirianni opted to give Gainwell’s touches to other running backs like Jordan Howard and Boston Scott. If Boston Scott is to depart in free agency, look for Gainwell to fill in his role as the change of pace back.

2.08 Justin Fields

QB Bears 22 y.o.

The former Ohio State quarterback struggled in his first season in the NFL. Justin Fields showed flashes throughout the season with his legs but struggled with his arm. Fields threw for seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 12 games this season. The Bears hired former Colts defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus to replace Matt Nagy as head coach. If Eberflus can help progress and build around Fields he could develop into a very reliable fantasy starter for years to come.

2.09 Josh Palmer

WR Chargers 22 y.o.

Josh Palmer showed flashes towards the end of his rookie season. Palmer posted over 14 points in all three games where he received 60% or more of the team’s snaps. With fellow wide receiver Mike Williams, a free agent this offseason, the pathway for Palmer to be the number two receiver for Justin Herbert is feasible.

2.10 Mac Jones

QB Patriots 23 y.o.

The Patriots took their Tom Brady replacement 15th overall in the NFL Draft, selecting Alabama product, Mac Jones. The Patriots may have gotten the best quarterback in this draft class. Jones had an impressive rookie season, helping his Patriots get back into the playoffs. While Jones looks like a good NFL quarterback, his situation may hold him back from ever blossoming into a fantasy superstar. The Patriots want to run the football and Mac Jones is far from a mobile quarterback. If the Patriots ever decide to change their offensive philosophy and become a pass-first team, expect Jones to sky-rocket up these rankings. Until then, Jones is an average QB2.

2.11 Chuba Hubbard

RB Panthers 22 y.o.

In the past two seasons, the Christian McCaffrey handcuff has had fantasy value. In 2020, it was Mike Davis, in 2021 it was rookie Chuba Hubbard. Was Hubbard able to replicate McCaffrey-like numbers? No, but who can replicate those numbers? Hubbard had an okay rookie season, putting up over 10 fantasy points in five out of the six games where he received at least 50% of the team’s offensive snaps. It is obvious that this backfield belongs to McCaffrey, Hubbard will only be fantasy relevant when McCaffrey is injured.

2.12 Nico Collins

WR Texans 22 y.o.

Nico Collins had an average season for what was expected out of him. With Deshaun Watson sitting the entire season out due to his legal situations and pending trade request, the Texans started journeyman Tyrod Taylor and rookie Davis Mills. This capped the upside for a good fantasy season for Collins. Collins finished the season with 33 receptions, 446 receiving yards, and only one touchdown. Hopefully, the Texans figure out a solution at quarterback to give Collins a chance to develop into a solid fantasy receiver.
