Russell Wilson Fantasy Football Outlook (2024)
The Steelers have made several moves at the quarterback position this offseason. Last year, the quarterback room included Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph. All three started multiple games for Pittsburgh. However, none of them will wear black and gold in 2024.
Trubisky asked for his release early in the offseason. Meanwhile, Rudolph signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent, becoming Will Levis’ backup. Many expected the team to add a veteran to compete with Pickett for the starting job.
Therefore, no one was surprised when Wilson signed with the Steelers. The former superstar signed for the veteran minimum because the Denver Broncos owe him nearly $39 million in 2024 not to play for their team. The plan in Pittsburgh was for Wilson and Pickett to compete for the starting job, hoping that competition would help both players bounce back from disappointing 2023 seasons.
However, Pickett didn’t take well to the competition and got traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming Jalen Hurts’ backup. The Steelers quickly added Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears for a Day 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Reportedly, head coach Mike Tomlin told both quarterbacks that Wilson is the starter and Fields is the backup. Yet, many believe there will be a training camp battle between both quarterbacks. Even if Wilson is the starter for the entire season, fantasy players should have limited expectations.
Last year, the veteran was the QB14, averaging 17.1 fantasy football points per game. His days as a fantasy football star are likely over, especially after the team traded away Diontae Johnson and hired Arthur Smith and his run-heavy offense as offensive coordinator.
