Super Bowl LVI Prop Bets

Every year sportsbooks put out a bunch of crazy (but fun) prop bets. These go as straightforward as MVP of the game to wacky like what brand will have the first commercial. Many of the sportsbooks have a few of these, but the Bovada book seems to take the cake with this line of bets. Here are a few of my favorites for Sunday’s game to make it interesting on and off the field.

Super Bowl MVP

This has some very good lines if you want to make a few bucks. The obvious picks are the quarterbacks with Matthew Stafford at +125 and Joe Burrow at +235. However, the real fun comes with Aaron Darnold (+1000) and Joe Mixon (+3500). I can see either one of these players taking over the game and getting the MVP nod and with those odds. I’m personally going to be dropping $100 on Mixon.

Who will the Super Bowl MVP thank first?

Now, this is a super juicy prop! There are lots of things to consider when making this bet. For example, let’s say Stafford gets the nod; does he thank Sean McVay for bringing him to LA (Coach +750), ownership for pulling the trigger (+2000), his family/wife for supporting him (+550), Los Angeles since they will be in front of the home crowd (city +500), or the traditional route of thanking his teammates (-125)? You could also make the argument in any player thanking God/Jesus at +225. If Stafford does get the MVP honor, I think I’m going with him thanking his wife and family first. His wife has been a very vocal supporter and recovering from a battle with a tumor.

National Anthem duration

The duration of the National Anthem is always a popular special prop for the Super Bowl. This year we have country music star Mickey Guyton singing the national anthem, with an over/under of 1 minute and 40 seconds. The last time The Star-Spangled Banner was sung under 1 minute and 40 seconds was 10 years ago with Kelly Clarkson who sang it in 1 minute and 34 seconds. Since then it has taken, on average, 2 minutes and 8 seconds. The under is currently at +120, but I think I’d rather take the over at -160.

Will any kick hit the upright or crossbar?

This is one of the more interesting props, especially with the sheer number of field goals the Bengals have been scoring. Rookie kicker, Evan McPherson has gone a perfect 12 for 12 with field goals in the playoffs which is pretty awesome in itself, but also shows that the Bengals are averaging 4 field goals per game. So you have field goals, extra points, and then with it being ANY KICK, you have kick-offs as well.  With +330 odds to hit the crossbar and -500 to not hit the uprights, I’m putting my money on a kicked ball hitting the upright.

What will be the first commercial to play?

This prop is quite difficult to guess, but I think you either have to go the traditional route (Budweiser +170) or a company that has a lot to gain (Crypto.com -115). I have to think Budweiser usually holds off until later in the game, and Crypto.com wants to be remembered. I’m putting my money with cryptocurrencies!

Drake Curse

Last but not least, it’s my favorite Super Bowl special bet. Apparently, there is a Drake curse where it seems any time Drake wears a jersey, that team or athlete loses. This has spanned across different sports (soccer, tennis, boxing, football, UFC) and earlier in this NFL season he was seen wearing a Lamar Jackson jersey and we all know how the Ravens season worked out. So who’s jersey does he wear? Odell Bekham Jr lived and trained at Drake’s house for a while and Drake probably has many more ties to LA than Cincinnati. It’s a fair bet that he probably roots for the Rams on Sunday. Odds are currently at Bengals +175 and Rams -240 and I am going with him wearing the Rams jersey.
