Tank Bigsby – 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Running Back – Auburn

6’0” 210 lbs

3rd Round (88th Overall) – Jacksonville Jaguars

Pre-Draft Profile

Tank Bigsby was a name many have thrown around as a boom/bust type of pick. While draft capital would be a huge reason to boost him up, Bigsby was selected in the 3rd round. Additionally, giving the Jaguars a running back that they really needed to pair with standout Travis Etienne.

With this pick, Jacksonville is making clear that Etienne is not necessarily a bell cow back. All off-season head coach Doug Pederson made it clear that he didn’t want to have one back in this backfield. Yet, have guys you can rotate at any given time. It’s all coming together as the Jaguars re-signed JaMycal Hasty and also added D’Ernest Johnson this offseason.

Bigsby has the size to be an effective running back in the NFL, and no better coach to pair him with than Pederson. Being the most explosive asset the Auburn Tigers had, Bigsby worked with what he had.

With all said above, Bigsby did tend to have a few flaws in his runs as his vision is spotty. Furthermore, he will tend to wait too long for holes to open or be too early at the point of attack. Additionally, he also had a case of drops throughout his college career. But like Etienne, I see Pederson working with Bigsby to make it all work.

Fantasy Football Outlook

As of this moment, Bigsby steps into what could be the No.2 back in the Jaguars’ offense. With improvements on the offensive line, adding a big back like Bigsby makes him a perfect fit for this offense. Additionally, he fits a perfect first and second-down type back, which will help give Etienne a breather.

You may think this is a knock on Etienne, but I see it as a nice benefit as we’ve seen what Pederson has done with his running backs. The rotation alone could scream running back points if all goes well. Etienne has immense upside in the passing game, which will give him far more volume than Bigsby moving forward.

In redraft leagues, Bigsby should be drafted outside the top 100 as a pure handcuff to Etienne. Although Etienne is two years removed from a foot injury, it’s his field to lose. I see Bigsby being a running back who will be under 100 carries. If anything were to happen to Etienne though, Bigsby could move up to RB2 value.

Dynasty Outlook

This 2023 NFL Draft class was deep with running backs, providing a lot of value and potential. The Jacksonville Jaguars made a great decision in selecting Bigsby in the third round as the seventh running back taken in the draft. Even though Bigsby may not be making an impact immediately, he definitely has the potential to do so if the opportunity presents itself.

The “one injury away” mentality is a reality for Bigsby and he is in the perfect spot to capitalize on it. With the right coaching and development, Bigsby could be a major contributor to the Jaguars’ success and succeed as a running back in the NFL

In 1QB and Superflex leagues, Bigsby can be taken anywhere at the end of the second, or beginning of the third round. Overall, he gives a manager the depth that we all like to have but has a superior back ahead of him.
