Initially, he had only planned to make a baseball league for himself and his friends to play against each other, but it ended up becoming something huge.

Okrent and his friends held the first fantasy sports competition ever during the 1979–80 MLB season. They put together their teams through a draft the night before the first round of games. Every entrant would have to pay $250 to enter, and the prize money would be split between the top three winners in each league. This original fantasy game was soon dubbed “Rotisserie Baseball,” after the New York eatery where the inaugural draft was held.

The majority of Okrent’s league’s members were media professionals. In 1983, books came out to help players choose the best team to win the league. The American is known as the person who created fantasy sports, but he has never been able to make money off of it. He and his friends have always had trouble protecting the idea. Eventually, copyright laws were put in place to protect the league’s name. This led other games to use the name “fantasy baseball.” Okrent said he had never felt bad about not being able to make money off his idea.

The Modern Era of Fantasy Sports

With competitions in sports other than baseball, fantasy sports have grown into their own thing since the late 1970s. These days, people join fantasy leagues based on basketball, American football, and soccer games.

Due to its success, the industry is currently valued at $1.5 billion, and major corporations such as CBS, Disney, and Yahoo have become major competitors. More than $300 million has been raised by new players in the game, such as DraftKings and FanDuel. This kind of cash flow comes from investors that include major NBA, NHL, and NFL teams.

The knock-on effect of this has been more investment in the fantasy sports industry.
