The Most Consistent Fantasy Football Wide Receivers of 2022

The-Most-Consistent-Fantasy-Football-Wide-Receivers-of-2022

With the 2022 fantasy football season over, it’s time to recap some of the best and most consistent wide receivers. When you’re playing in a head-to-head league where each week matters, it’s essential to have these players that will consistently produce for you. Of course, you want a top-tier wide receiver with the potential to score 40 points and win you a week, but it’s frustrating dealing with wide receivers that you can’t trust weekly. You don’t know if they’re worth even starting or if you have to bench them because there’s a good chance they’ll bust for your team.

However, the Consistency Score (CS) can help eliminate this confusion and help you find which players are more consistent. In this article, I’m going to compare the receivers who finished in the top 12 for fantasy football points per game versus the top 12 according to the Consistency Score. On top of that, I’ll be debunking a few popular boom or bust claims for players. Let’s get right into it with The Most Consistent Fantasy Football Wide Receivers of 2022.

What is the Consistency Score?

Before we go into the comparison and analysis, I’m going to give a brief explanation of what the Consistency Score is. The goal of the tool is to find out who is not just consistent for fantasy football purposes, but consistently good. It also explains that using this tool, the player with a higher ceiling would still have a higher CS. When looking at the CS data next to the targets-per-route-run tool, you’ll see a correlation between the two. 2022 Most Consistent Players Not in the Top-12 in PPG

Chris Godwin

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Chris Godwin has been a staple of consistency and has been one of my favorite players to roster in fantasy football due to this. I never expected Godwin to be this high due to the number of wide receivers finishing ahead of him on a PPG basis. However, Godwin was the WR7 in terms of consistency, with a score of 5.41. This formula only rewards players with good consistent production, as Godwin averaged 14.9 PPG.

While Godwin wasn’t a WR1, this level of consistency is extremely valuable. Compared to the rest of these players, he was tied for the second-lowest Top-12 finish percentage with 17.65%. When looking at this type of data to determine a player’s value, it’s an excellent idea to cross-reference a player’s consistency score with their PPG ranking. However, on a PPG basis, Godwin just missed the cut, finishing as the WR13.

To recap how effective Godwin was this past year, according to FantasyPros ADP, he was drafted as the WR24. The return Godwin provided was amazing, finishing as the WR13 on a PPG basis, along with the WR7 in CS. This combination cements him as one of the most productive players from the past year, despite returning from his torn ACL and MCL.

Deebo Samuel

San Francisco 49ers

Next up is Deebo Samuel, who is someone I’m surprised to see on this list due to his low finish on a PPG basis. Unlike Godwin, Samuel was drafted very high and provided a poor return. On the other hand, in terms of production, Samuel was very consistent and averaged 13 PPG. This is interesting because Samuel is often labeled as a boom or bust type of player due to his number of big plays and games. With that being said, Samuel didn’t provide much upside like the other players on this list, as he only finished inside the top 12 wide receivers 11.76% of the time.

An important factor to note when evaluating Samuel’s CS is that his floor didn’t drop below 5.8 points at any given week. This was higher than anyone else in the top 12 except for Ja’Marr Chase. Overall, Samuel was a solid player but just didn’t live up to his expectations after his fantastic year prior. This past year Samuel was drafted as the WR6, but he finished below this on a PPG and according to the CS. Finishing as the WR24 on a PPG basis and WR12 in CS, Samuel didn’t live up to these expectations of being a WR1.

All that being said, Samuel is not a bad player by any means thanks to the upside he provides with his rushing ability and consistency. I like his value if he’s being drafted as a WR2 or Flex play as we look ahead to 2023. If you can get Samuel around the WR24 range, I would be fine with drafting him next year due to these factors.

Debunking the Boom or Bust Claims

Jaylen Waddle

Miami Dolphins

One of the biggest surprises on this list was Jaylen Waddle. He just barely made the cut as the WR12 in our Consistency Score ranking for the year. He had a score of 5.1 which is very solid when many people are making him out to be a complete boom or bust. While there is some truth to this, Waddle finished the season with five games under 10 points. This number isn’t quite as high as you might’ve thought.

This past year Waddle played in 17 games and he had a good CS over 70% of the time. On top of this, one of the reasons Waddle was so great is the incredible ceiling he offers. This solid CS, along with a top-12 finish in 29.41% of games, is phenomenal. That means he was a WR1 in nearly 1/3 of the games played all year.

To recap Waddle’s 2022 season, he was drafted with an ADP of WR19 and finished as the WR8 on a PPG basis. Waddle cemented himself as a top wide receiver due to his massive spike weeks and excellent CS. Coming into this past season, Waddle was surrounded with questions, thanks to the addition of Tyreek Hill and questions surrounding Tue Tagovailoa. However, using the CS, it is evident that Waddle is not nearly as boom or bust as many may have thought.

DeVonta Smith

Philadelphia Eagles

DeVonta Smith was fantastic this season, finishing as the WR10 on a PPG basis. However, he didn’t fare quite as well on the Consistency Score. Smith was the WR18 with a 4.3 on the CS. While this isn’t terrible, this is still a big difference that bumps Smith down my rankings. This difference makes Smith one of the biggest boom or busts of these top wide receivers.

On the other hand, Smith has fantastic upside finishing as a top 12 wide receiver 23.53% of the time. What killed Smith’s CS was his low floor, with three games where he had under five fantasy points. To break down Smith’s 2022 season, according to FantasyPros ADP, he was drafted as the WR37. Nevertheless, Smith gave his owners a fantastic return finishing as the WR10. What worries me is that Smith’s PPG and CS weren’t as close as some of these other players he will be drafted next to this upcoming season. Of course, you should still value Smith highly, but his WR10 finish might be a bit deceiving.
