Top Dynasty Football Buys Before the 2023 Fantasy Season
The 2023 fantasy football season is almost here. Finally, the rookies you’ve drafted in leagues finally have their chance to shine. With this, it also means it’s your last chance to trade for players before their value is massively affected by their in-season performance.
The list below contains four players who you need to buy in your dynasty leagues before it’s too late. With that said, let’s dive into the four dynasty players you need to buy before the 2023 Season.
Sam Howell – QB – Washington Commanders
Even after being named the starter for the Washington Commanders, Sam Howell is still ranked as the QB22 and 97th overall on KeepTrade Cut (KTC). For one, it’s rarely a bad investment anytime you can buy a starting quarterback for this cheap. In a Superflex format, a guy like Howell is a massive value.
Howell looked great in the preseason and has some solid weapons to throw, too. Hopefully, Terry McLaurin will return soon, but he also has Jahan Dotson, Antonio Gibson, and Curtis Samuel. By no means is this an elite group, but it has some explosive players.
More importantly, and what’s being overlooked right now, Howell has rushing upside. This automatically gives him a tremendous floor-ceiling combination. Although Howell isn’t incredibly fast, people forget he ran for 828 yards and 11 touchdowns at UNC.
In his only start last season, Howell ran for 35 yards and picked up a touchdown. This led him to an 18.3-point performance. If Howell can come close to this production in 2023, he’ll be a phenomenal value as your QB2.
Tua Tagovailoa – QB – Miami Dolphins
Heading into the 2023 season, Tua Tagovailoa continues to be a massive buy. Ranked as the QB11 and the 37th player overall on KTC, I can almost guarantee that he will be worth more than this by the 2024 off-season.
We all know why Tagovailoa is being ranked this low, and it’s because we all remember his conclusions from last year. Since these injuries happened near the back half of the season, it’s fresh in everyone’s minds.
However, you should never bet on injuries in fantasy, and Tagovailoa is just as likely to get a concussion as any other quarterback. Concussions are freak injuries, and there’s no way to predict them. That said, I am a little more concerned about what would happen if he does get one, as he could be out for a very long time.
From a talent perspective, we all saw what Tagovailoa can do on the field. Through the first nine games, Tagovailoa was averaging 20 PPG. Tagovailoa has built-in upside due to the fact that he has the best wide receiver duo in the league.
Personally, I think the narrative that Tagovailoa doesn’t have a strong arm is absurd. Last season, according to Dave Richard, Tagovailoa had the highest adjusted completion rate on deep passes (20+ yards) at 55.2%.
Tagovailoa is a phenomenal talent with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle at his disposal. When Tagovailoa dominates in 2023, you’ll be glad you traded for him.
T.J. Hockenson – TE – Minnesota Vikings
In dynasty leagues, you win your league by staying one step ahead of your opponents. Although he’s not cheap, T.J. Hockenson is massively underpriced, with a rank of 60 on KTC. If you have Mark Andrews, please trade down to get Hockenson, and if you have Dalton Kincaid or George Kittle, go and tier up to him.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with my game, I’m the biggest T.J. Hockenson fanboy on the internet. For 2023 and beyond, Hockenson should be ranked ahead of Andrews.
After being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, I was expecting to buy Hockenson for the long term because it often takes tight ends a long time to adjust to a new offensive scheme. Not Hockenson, who was productive with the Vikings right away, averaging 14.5 points per game (PPG).
Andrews is two years older than Hockenson, and I don’t see him returning to his 2021 form, where he finished as the TE1. Andrews is facing the most target competition of his career with Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, who are both under 24. On top of this, Odell Beckham will likely be the WR1 in this offense for 2023.
Elite tight ends are so hard to trade for in dynasty due to the massive positional advantage they provide. Don’t miss your chance and either tier up or down to acquire Hockenson while you still can. With his recent contract extension, you’ll need to capitalize quickly.
Elijah Moore – WR, Cleveland Browns
Elijah Moore is ranked 114th on KTC, but he looks nothing like the players surrounding him. He’s a talented 23-year-old receiver with the upside to skyrocket up these rankings. If you can trade down from Khalil Herbert or Marvin Mims to Moore, you should be doing so.
Coming out of Mississippi, Moore was touted as a great prospect and selected 34th overall by the New York Jets. Despite only starting in six games, Moore flashed early and often, finishing the year with a 43-538-5 stat line, which was good for 12.6 PPG.
Then 2022 hit, and Moore fell off a cliff. This season isn’t a fair assessment of his game, as Moore spent more time arguing with Mike LaFleur than playing football. When he was on the field, he had Zach Wilson throwing him the ball. To call this a bad situation is an understatement.
The Browns, however, still believe Moore is talented and gave up a second-round pick for him. Moore has been impressive all training camp and is currently listed as the WR2 on the Browns depth chart. Not only should Moore be involved in the offense this year, but he has a chance to take over for 29-year-old Amari Cooper in the future.
With Moore, I’m making the bet that a talented receiver will thrive with a Deshaun Watson bounceback. I believe that Watson has finally had time to knock the rust off and will return to playing like a top-five quarterback for 2023 and beyond. Getting a talented young receiver in Moore who will have Watson throwing him the ball is a no-brainer.
