Tyreek Hill: Fantasy Football Fallout
In a blockbuster trade, the Kansas City Chiefs trade Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for five draft picks, yes five draft picks! Draft picks included are 2022 1st-round pick (pick 29), 2nd-round pick (pick 50), and 4th-round pick, plus 2023 4th-round and 6th-round picks. The Dolphins give Hill a four-year, $120 million extension with $72 million in guarantees making him the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history. Yeah I know, who cares about the picks and money. More importantly, what does this mean for fantasy football? I will talk about what this means for Hill, Patrick Mahomes, Tua Tagovailoa, the Chiefs, and the Dolphins. So let’s start with the main man himself, Tyreek Hill.
Tyreek Hill
Hill is an elite wide receiver no doubt, but this will hurt his value some. You can’t go from catching passes from Mahomes in an Andy Reid/Eric Bieniemy led offense to catching passes from Tagovailoa in an offense under a first-time head coach in Mike McDaniel without expecting to lose some value. Without doing a deep dive in rankings I would say this easily moves Hill out of the top-five and probably somewhere in the 8-10 range of wide receivers. With that said I still believe Hill is a great wide receiver for fantasy and this is not the time to panic sell.
Patrick Mahomes
Losing Hill definitely hurts Mahome’s value as Hill is the best wide receiver Mahomes has played with and maybe will ever play with. The Chiefs recently signed JuJu Smith-Schuster, but no he is not Hill, and Kelce isn’t getting any younger. This moves Mahomes down below Josh Allen and just barely ahead of Justin Herbert in my dynasty rankings.
Tua Tagovailoa
The biggest fantasy winner of this trade is easily Tagovailoa. Now he has Hill to pair with Jaylen Waddle to form one of the NFL’s top-five wide receiver duos. With both Hill and Waddle being top 12 dynasty wide receivers in most rankings Tagovailoa has no excuse to not perform well and put up some good stats this year. This is his opportunity to prove himself and live up to the “Tank for Tua” hype he had when he was coming out of college.
Kansas City Chiefs
While the Chiefs gain a ton of draft capital with this trade they lose a playmaker at wide receiver who can stretch the field. They will need to use one of these draft picks to get another wide receiver to play opposite Smith-Schuster because every team in their division made moves to better themselves this off-season. The Chargers resigned Mike Williams, Raiders traded for Davante Adams, and Broncos traded for Russell Wilson.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins came into this free agency with a plan to upgrade the offense and they succeeded, at least on paper. They brought in Connor Williams and Terron Armstead to improve the offensive line, signed Chase Edmonds, resigned Mike Gesicki, and now traded for Hill. The Dolphins offense should make a significant leap forward in 2022.
