Waiver Wire Pickups for IDP Fantasy Football – Week 14

We’re bringing on some of the most notable IDP waiver wire pickups for fantasy football leagues in Week 14. There could be NFL players who should or could be available at different format levels each week. Ultimately, this allows us to either start them in Week 14 or stash them on your bench for next time. Or simple enough, if we have the room or the expendables on our benches. Either way, we can get ahead and stack our depth deeper if at all possible for the fantasy football season long haul. Let’s get right into it.

Waiver Wire Pickups for IDP Fantasy Football – Week 14

Andrew Van Ginkel (Edge) Miami Dolphins

  • Week 14 at Tennessee Titans – Strong
  • Week 15 vs. New York Jets– Strong
  • Week 16 vs. Dallas Cowboys – OK

Likely on many standard league-type IDP formats, Miami’s Andrew Van Ginkel had a terrific game in Week 13. He was stepping in for Edge Rusher Jaelan Phillips (Achilles) who landed on the I.R. last week. Which Van Ginkle had stepped in for before back in weeks 2 to 5, earning a very high PFF grade at the same time. He recorded 4 sacks, 17 combined tackles, and numerous other IDP stats that padded his box score. So it wasn’t any surprise that in his first start in some time he made a killing. Even added a pick-six that was awarded to his managers who were lucky enough to grab him last week. And as a bonus that will carry over nicely for at least the next two weeks.

On the year, both the Titans and the Jets have remained a top 10 option for edge rushers to face. And although the Titans are more tackle-friendly than in the backfield stats. Van Ginkle won’t have any problems matching his higher-end averages when playing as a starter. Not to mention, he now has the potential this year to overachieve. This means he’ll more than likely get into both backfields. And potentially add a couple more big box score plays like a forced or recovered fumble.

Derrick Barnes (ILB) Detriot Lions

  • Week 14 at Chicago Bears – Strong
  • Week 15 vs. Denver Broncos – Strong
  • Week 16 at Minnesota Vikings – Strong

More of an LB2 play in Week 14 versus the linebacker-friendly Bears, Derrick Barnes is a plus side IDP. Although, it’s going to be hampered whether or not the Lions activate Alex Anzalone (hand) in this game. Simply enough, if Anzalone is out, his upside immediately shoots up to a projected LB1 versus Chicago. Exspecially when we look back a little at Week 11 the first time this year these two teams matched up in Detriot. Barnes had a great game, recording 6 solos, 2 assists, and added a tackle for loss. Also noting, Barnes saw an unusually high amount of snaps (95%), as well as the other two ILB starters. So we do not doubt that even if Anzalone does play, Barnes can easily repeat those types of numbers. And it’s only going to matter if this matchup’s upside carries over to an even higher ceiling.

The Bears are another top team allowing mass production off the edge all year. And actually, the reason why Barnes came to the surface for this week’s waiver wire. Meaning with or without Anzalone, Barnes would have been on this list anyhow. Exspecially when we can see nothing has changed in the last three contests. And including the Lions game in Week 11. The Bears have given about 6 starting ILBs a total of 45 solos, 23 assists, and 4.5 tackles for a loss altogether. Hence, relegating any starting ILBs as solid or better LB1 plays as waiver wire pickups.

John Johnson (SAF) Los Angeles Rams

  • Week 14 at Chicago Bears – Strong
  • Week 15 vs. Denver Broncos – Strong
  • Week 16 at Minnesota Vikings – Strong

As we mentioned in various FFfaceoff IDP content this past week. The Rams have moved on recently from starting strong safety Russ Yeast. Instead opting to give veteran DB1 John Johnson the reigns in the last couple of contests. And although that’s not translated into all that much, it’s still notable as a deep default DB2 play-by-volume. Especially when the Rams had only come in with around 4 known IDPs worth rostering. And although that number has increased it’s still only about 6 including Johnson.

Rams ILB Ernest Jones has been wearing out and recently hurt. As is the entire defense, which has been limited when it comes to any real defensive depth. which seems to have led the Rams to get everything they can out of who they do have. Hence enter Johnson who’s only played limited snaps thus far this year. Johnson will likely be playing more up in the box where the team has struggled at ILB a little next to Jones. And where they also don’t hand out full-time LB2 snaps. Leaving Johnson as a capable play by default in a position that Yeast could never take advantage of.

As a hot waiver wire pickup, Johnson just recorded 6 combined, 1 forced fumble, and 2 passes defended in Week 13. This is plenty enough to lock him in as a solid deeper DB2 versus an offense led by QB Lamar Jackson. And he likes to target the TE and Slot if they aren’t normally running the ball into the second level where Johnson plays.
