2022 IDP Rookie Report

2022-IDP-Rookie-Report

The 2022 fantasy football season may have come to an end, but it is never too late to take a look ahead to the 2023 campaign. In this IDP Rookie Report, we will take a look at the top rookies from the 2022 NFL Draft class that made an impact in the fantasy football IDP realm.

2023 IDP Rookie Report: The Players

Jalen Pitre (DB) – Houston Texans

In the last five years, only two DBs have finished in the top three as a rookie, Derwin James, and Jalen Pitre. Pitre is the only one to finish as THE No. 1 defensive back in the last five years. He finished the season strong by scoring 15 or more points in each of his last seven games and failed to reach double-digit points only three times.

Pitre’s impressive season included five games where he recorded 10+ tackles and three games with an unbelievable 30+ points. This offseason many will wonder if they should sell high on Pitre. While it is unlikely that he finishes as the No.1 defensive back again I  wouldn’t be so quick to sell. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him have multiple top-five seasons.

George Karlaftis (DL) – Kansas City Chiefs

Karlaftis finished the season off strong with double-digit points in six of seven games. In those seven games, he recorded five and a half sacks. The Chiefs have finished in the top six in offensive points scored for five straight years and that bodes well for Karlaftis.

With teams trying to keep up with the Chiefs’ offense it will allow him many opportunities to pin his ears back and rush the passer. His stock is definitely pointing up going into next year and I would not be surprised to see him have double-digit sacks in 2023.

Devin Lloyd (LB) – Jacksonville Jaguars

Lloyd had a bit of an up-and-down season. He started off strong with 18+ points in four of his first five games and double-digit tackles in three of those games. Since then he has failed to record double-digit tackles in a game. He also scored fewer than 10 points eight times.

Lloyd’s snap percentage was up and down during the second half of the season with six games under 70% of the snaps. Furthermore, it is uncertain what his snap percentage will be in 2023 and whether or not he will be someone you can rely on starting.

Malcolm Rodriguez (LB) – Detroit Lions

It has been a tale of two halves for Rodriguez. He started the season off with five straight games with double-digit points and at least five tackles. Since then he only managed to score more than 10 points just twice.

Not only did Rodriguez only record double-digit tackles once all season, but from Week 9 on he recorded more than five tackles only once. After Week 7 he failed to reach 70% of snaps in any game. All that being said, I have a feeling that his low snap percentage will carry over into 2023.

Quay Walker (LB) – Green Bay Packers

Walker played at least 70% of snaps in 14 games. While his snap percentage is good for a rookie he failed to score more than 12 points in eight games. Walker also doesn’t offer much in the way of sacks or quarterback hits.

With that said he did manage to record 119  tackles with at least eight tackles in seven games. Even though he relies heavily on tackles I believe he will continue to improve and be a solid option at linebacker.

Kayvon Thibodeaux (DL/LB) – New York Giants

Thibodeaux dealt with some injuries early on that caused him to miss the first two weeks. He had a very up-and-down season with only one sack in his first nine games. While he had a slow start things started to come together and he finished strong. In his last five games, he had three sacks and at least five tackles in four of those games.

Thibodeaux also had 10 quarterback hits in his last six games. Throughout the season Thibodeaux showed some flashes and the big play ability that made him a top-five pick.

Jack Sanborn (LB) – Chicago Bears

Sanborn took over the starting job after the Bears traded Roquan Smith. In the five games he played at least 80% of the snaps, he had double-digit tackles in three of them. He suffered an ankle injury in Week 15 against the Eagles and missed the rest of the season. Sanborn has a good chance to finish toward the top in tackles in 2023 as long as Chicago doesn’t bring in someone else.

Aidan Hutchinson (DL) – Detroit Lions

Hutchinson had a great rookie season. It was a little up and down in the first half but got more consistent over the second half. He had just two games with 15 or more points in the first half but then stepped up his play to finish with five games of 15 or more points. Overall, Hutchinson finished with 9.5 sacks and I see him finishing with double-digit sacks more often than not for the next decade or more.

Jaquan Brisker (DB) – Chicago Bears

Brisker produced right away in Week 1. He played at least 96% of snaps in every game and was very consistent as a fantasy scorer. Additionally, Brisker had double-digit points and at least five tackles in all but two games. He is one of only five defensive backs who have finished with 100 or more tackles as a rookie in the last five years and he did that while missing two games. Brisker is also tied for second in sacks among defensive backs with four. He has locked up the starting spot and looks like he will be a star player for this Bears’ defense for many years.
