As per usual in Week 1 of the preseason, most starters are resting, although some will get a few series, while rookies will get more. It is obviously hard to predict how much playing time certain players will get so when I cap these preseason games, I am basing a lot of it on quarterback talent, depth and coaching. Browns +2.5 @ Jaguars
DeShaun Watson will be getting some burn, we don’t know exactly how much but he will be out there. Behind him will be Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs, two capable backups who can definitely move the football, especially against backups. The Jags will probably show Trevor Lawrence for a decent chunk since he didn’t play in the Hall of Fame game, but after that, it’s Jake Luton and C.J. Beathard. The Jags do have the benefit of having one game under their belt this preseason, but they looked pretty awful in that game, losing 27-11 to the Raiders.
Cardinals @ Bengals, Under 31
Kyler Murray will not be playing tonight, but Colt McCoy is a competent backup and has a ton of experience in this league. Meanwhile, Joe Burrow is unlikely to play and the Bengals back him up with Brandon Allen and Jake Browning. Allen, we saw a few years back with the Broncos and he was awful, Browning from Washington University has little to no experience starting in the NFL. I’ll take the points with the Cardinals and throw the under in there as well.
Jets +1 @ Eagles, Over 35.5
Both Zach Wilson and Jalen Hurts should see a few series in this game and behind them are some capable backups. The Jets have Joe Flacco and Mike White, also the scrambler in Chris Strevler. Philly has Gardner Minshew and the rookie from Nevada Carson Strong who has a big arm and definitely has some promise. I will give the Jets the nod here with their quarterback play and I think we will also get enough points to push this one over.
Packers @ 49ers, Under 35.5
Will not be seeing Aaron Rodgers in this game, but we will see Trey Lance. Outside of that the quarterback play in this game is very suspect. Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy for the 49ers with Jordan Love and Danny Etling for the Packers. Total is set at 35.5, give me the under here.
