2023 Fantasy Football Rankings: Top 12 Quarterbacks

The season is approaching, and with training camp starting, so does our research to ensure you have the best fantasy team in your leagues. Today, we will discuss the Top 12 Quarterbacks in my Fantasy Football Rankings and explain why they are in the order they appear. In the past, the late-round QB strategy was effective in helping you win your leagues. Although that may still help in some instances, the Elite quarterbacks have increased their worth over the last few seasons. As I break down this ranking below, you will see which quarterback style you feel most comfortable heading into the 2023 season. Let’s begin where everyone begins, in Kansas City.

QB1 Patrick Mahomes (QB-KC)

What is there to honestly say about Patrick Mahomes? He is one of the best of all time at the position. He could be the GOAT by the end of his playing career. It doesn’t matter who he is paired with on the field; as long as he can create and Andy Reid calls the shots, the sky is the limit for Patrick Mahomes.

My favorite fact:

Mahomes has averaged 303 passing yards and 23.95 fantasy points per game in his playing career in the NFL.

QB2 Jalen Hurts (QB-PHI)

This pick is different from my homer-heart making the selection of Jalen Hurts. He can score on the ground as a Konami Code for your fantasy team. Hurts proved that last year with 13 touchdowns on the ground. As long as the Tush Push play stays within the legal realm of the NFL rules, this should continue to prosper within the Philadelphia Eagles offense. The main reason he sits ahead of Josh Allen was his ability to protect the ball last season. Hurts had a 1.3% INT rate; unlike Allen, he is safe with the ball, and with that electric offense, Hurts should supply fantasy points by the dozen in 2023.

My favorite fact :

Hurts averaged over 50 rushing yards over his NFL career, providing your team with a safe floor each week.

QB3 Josh Allen (QB-BUF)

Josh Allen could be the QB1 this season, and every year, he plays in the NFL. My biggest issue with Allen is his ability to turn the ball over. However, the Buffalo Bills invested in a pass-catching option when they drafted Dalton Kincaid for the tight end position. With Gabriel Davis being 100% healthy and James Cook having the chance to take over the backfield, the Buffalo Bills have a surplus of game-changers at every position. Allen and the Buffalo Bills can explode on offense in 2023.

My favorite stats:

Allen has thrown for 4,000 yards in three straight seasons, with 35-37 touchdowns each season. If he can keep the interceptions down, he can light up the scoreboard for your fantasy team every week.

QB4 Lamar Jackson (QB-BAL)

At this rate in the offseason, everyone is excited about the changes happening in Baltimore around this former MVP quarterback. Lamar Jackson received a new offensive coordinator who will throw the ball compared to the OCs of the past. He also received a plethora of wide receivers, including Odell Beckham Jr. and Zay Flowers. Jackson also should receive a healthy Rashod Bateman and a fully healthy Mark Andrews. If you slip in a sprinkle of Isaiah Likely and J.K. Dobbins out of the backfield, Jackson should have every opportunity to thrive in 2023.

My favorite stat:

Lamar Jackson has averaged 63.4 rushing yards a game over his five NFL seasons. As Jalen Hurts, he provides a safe floor for your fantasy team.

QB5 Joe Burrow (QB-CIN)

Joe Burrow has suffered a calf injury as we are creating these rankings. He should be limited for a few weeks, which means he will see no field time during training camp. That doesn’t scare me, though, as Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He also throws the ball to Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, Irv Smith Jr, and Joe Mixon. Case Closed on why he is Top-5 in the QB rankings.

My favorite stat:

Burrow has completed 69.3% of his throws over the last two years. He also averages 8.1 yards per attempt. Burrow can extend each drive and gain a new set of downs on every pass. Therefore, he is among the best for your fantasy teams at providing maximum points on each drive.

QB6 Justin Herbert (QB-LAC)

Last season was a symphony of headaches for the Los Angeles Chargers. Justin Herbert was injured. Rashawn Slater was injured. Mike Williams and Keenan Allen were injured. The offensive Coordinator instilled an offense that led Herbert to one of the lowest ADOTs of his career. It was a disaster. However, in 2023, the Chargers have Kellen Moore, who will open up the downfield offense. The Los Angeles Chargers drafted Quentin Johnston to help propel the scheme downfield. Herbert is healthy, in a potent offense, and ready to re-establish himself in 2023.

My favorite stat:

Herbert had 68 downfield attempts last season and only completed 22 of them. With a healthy wide receiver core (plus Quentin Johnston and Gerald Everett), these numbers should increase and become more efficient.

QB7 Trevor Lawrence (QB-JAC)

Trevor Lawrence has one of my favorite schedules with the AFC South and NFC South on his 2023 agenda. He also gets to upgrade his offense with Calvin Ridley and Tank Bigsby. Lawrence has immense talent, a great coach, talented players around him, and an easy schedule. The only thing that could scare me away from Lawrence is the “Eagles 2022 effect”. This effect is when your team is up by a plethora of points by half that the offense reverts to 1970s NFL mode and runs 80% of the second half.

My favorite stat:

Lawrence had the lowest check-down rate to running backs (tied with Jalen Hurts), which means he likes to push the ball down the field instead of checking it down. The larger the ADOT, the higher the fantasy point expectation per play.

QB8 Justin Fields (QB-CHI)

Another Konami Code-style quarterback. Justin Fields proved he could provide points in an instant with his legs. Can Fields provide that same quick strike of points through the air? The Chicago Bears did their best to help him by adding D.J. Moore to the offensive. They also have a healthy Chase Claypool and Darnell Mooney to help push this passing offense to new limits. With this new weapon in town, the Chicago Bears should move out of the basement regarding the passing rate per game.

My favorite stat:

Fields has a 54% completion level to the right side of the field on deep throws.

QB9 Deshaun Watson (QB-Cle)

Before the suspension, Deshaun Watson was a Top-5 quarterback in the NFL. Now he has a new team, a new coach, and a new start. Watson is a high-risk-high-reward setup for your fantasy team. The Cleveland Browns brought in Elijah Moore and Cedric Tillman to add to Amari Cooper, David Njoku, and Nick Chubb on this potent offense. He may break out, but it’s risky. Therefore, he lands closer to the bottom of this list than the top.

My favorite stat:

Watson threw for five touchdowns in the last two games of 2022.

QB10 Kirk Cousins (QB-MIN)

Kirk Cousins will never instill confidence and a cocky swagger in your fantasy team, but he always seems to deliver most of the time. The Minnesota Vikings added Jordan Addison to T.J. Hockenson and Justin Jefferson, giving Kirk Cousins the best pass-catching group in his NFL career. With Kevin O’Connell running 11% at one of the highest clips in the NFL, Cousins should have ample opportunity to create fantasy points every game.

My favorite stat:

His defense is still a bottom-half squad in the NFL. This weak defense should lead to more shootouts and the ability for Cousins to rack up the points trying to keep up with his opponents.

QB11 Tua Tagovailoa (QB-MIA)

Tua Tagovailoa is the definition of risky. He can be a fantastic asset for your fantasy team, but his health is scary to maneuver around during a fantasy season. If healthy, Tagovailoa has Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on his side, which makes his chances of providing a ceiling-level performance for your fantasy squad sky-high!

My favorite stat:

Tagovailoa lead all quarterbacks in passer rating, yards per attempt, and touchdown percentage in 2022.

QB12 Dak Prescott (QB-DAL)

Dak Prescott has the weapons. His team also gets the hype consistently year after year. However, his coach, Mike McCarthy, has stated he would like to slow the offense down to give his stellar defense a breather. Prescott should still provide a safe play weekly, but his ability to offer ceiling games has disappeared with his gruesome injury from years past. If you missed out on the elite quarterbacks, aiming for Prescott allows you to have a safe option in 2023.

My favorite stat:

Prescott should hopefully see a regression in interceptions, as he led the NFL in 2022 with 15 interceptions.
