According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Carolina Panthers are signing veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen to a three-year deal worth $25 million. (Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter)
Fantasy Football Outlook: Last year Thielen was the WR30, averaging 8.5 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. The former undrafted free agent had only six receiving touchdowns in 2021 after totaling 24 over the previous two seasons. Furthermore, the veteran wide receiver had under 750 receiving yards for the second consecutive year.
The Minnesota Vikings released Thielen earlier this offseason, as the team needed the salary cap space. While his days as an elite fantasy receiver are over, the former undrafted free agent is still a solid fantasy player. He has averaged at least 12.1 fantasy points per game in four of the past six seasons. However, Thielen’s fantasy production took a hit, with Justin Jefferson turning into a superstar.
While he is 32 years old, Thielen should have a productive 2023 season in Carolina. The Panthers traded DJ Moore to the Chicago Bears as part of the trade to acquire the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Therefore, Thielen will step in as the No. 1 wide receiver on the team next year. For reference, Moore has averaged 133.5 targets per season over the past four years, seeing at least 118 every season.
