NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to trade a fifth-round pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft and a 2023 sixth-round selection to the Houston Texans for WR Brandin Cooks.
Fantasy Football Outlook: This is the fourth time Cooks has been traded, tying Eric Dickerson for the most all-time. In addition to the Cooks move, the Texans also agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension worth $75 million, including $50 in guaranteed money with all-world LT Laremy Tunsil.
Cooks wanted out of Houston. He got his wish. Cooks was linked to Dallas since last season’s NFL trade deadline. It was only a matter of time. For the Cowboys, who needed another big play threat, this was a must-have move. Although the Cowboys were linked to both DeAndre Hopkins and Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason, Cooks was also in the equation.
Trading for Cooks all but takes the Cowboys out of the Hopkins sweepstakes, but there is a world where the Cowboys remain in on OBJ if the price is right.
Cooks, who is entering his age-30 season, has played nine seasons in the NFL, accumulating 1,000+ yards in six of them. Last season with the Texans Cooks hit a wall. His 57/699/3 stat line on 93 targets was his worst since 2019, his final year with the Rams. Cooks’ 2022 regression had more to do with his situation on a poor Texans offense than an overall regression with his play and skillset. As bad as it was, he was still the WR37 in FPPG (11.2).
Cooks will operate as the No. 2 wide receiver with the Cowboys behind CeeDee Lamb, which means he is going to draw the enemy defense’s complimentary cover corners, boding well for a bounce-back campaign. Considering where his potential ADP could land, Cooks is going to be a value pick in your fantasy drafts.
Cooks is the WR47 off the board in FFPC’s best ball drafts and 116.57 overall. Expect his price point to rise, however.
