Calvin Ridley – Dynasty Fallout
We all know that Calvin Ridley was suspended for betting on NFL games during the 2021 NFL season. According to Ridley himself, it was around $1500 in total that he gambled. The NFL saw this as enough to suspend him for the entirety of the season. Ridley was the topic of trade conversations, and the Falcons held off on trades, presumably knowing this was coming out. The Eagles were one team that around floated as a landing spot, who later traded for AJ Brown on draft day. The question comes in now, what is his value for dynasty leagues?
Right now, if he suits up in 2023, Ridley will be on the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons drafted rookie wide receiver Drake London with the 8th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and also drafted quarterback Desmond Ridder in the 3rd Round, 74th overall. Currently, Marcus Mariota is the starting quarterback for the Falcons.
The Falcons currently are one of the teams overall with the lowest Super Bowl odds, and would likely be considered a favorite for the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The top of the 2023 class is front-loaded with quarterback talents such as CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson as of now at the front.
If Ridley returns next season, he has the possibility to line up with the talented tight end Kyle Pitts in year three, London in year two, and himself. In a recent dynasty draft I did with Stack Attack Fantasy, I took Ridley 13.06 and really like that value there. If he were to be traded I don’t think it really affects his value at all, but right now I would try and buy low everywhere I can. The idea of catching passes from Stroud or Young is very appealing, or even Ridder if he plays well. It’s worth recalling that Ridder was talked about as a potential first-rounder at one point this offseason.
Ridley will turn 28 years old towards the end of the 2022 season and will be turning 29 at the end of the 2023 season. Ridley will hit free agency in 2024, as his 5th-year option was picked up for next season, and is under contract for the 2023 season. So he will be playing on a low-cap hit unless he works an extension with the Falcons.
Dynasty Leagues
In dynasty leagues, he’s worth holding or buying low on and just waiting to see what happens. If you have him and can afford to just let him take up space on your roster, great. He’s not a bad player to buy low on if the price is right, but even if he does come back, he’ll be getting up there in age and a few years since he even stepped onto the football field.
On the flip side, if you are competing to win now and get a decent offer for someone who can help you win this year, I’d take it. Don’t sell him just for the sake of selling, but you can definitely throw him on the trading block and there are likely some owners who still think he can be a great fantasy wide receiver in the future. Wide receivers generally have a longer shelf-life and can keep their value during times such as this.
