DeWayne McBride recently joined the Minnesota Vikings as the 222nd overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. His descent to the 7th round surprised some observers, as many projected him to be chosen between the 3rd and 5th rounds. McBride now finds himself amidst a packed running back group on the Vikings, where uncertainties loom regarding the starting role.
In 2022, McBride achieved an impressive feat by securing the second-highest rushing yardage in the nation. He totaled 1,713 yards and 19 touchdowns in a mere 11 games. His exceptional performance was highlighted by an outstanding average of 7.4 yards per attempt. Notably, he showcased his exceptional contact balance with an impressive 1,072 yards after contact. Moreover, McBride demonstrated his ability to break big plays with eight carries of 45 yards or more.
Regrettably, due to McBride’s absence from the NFL Combine and Pro Day, there is a lack of official testing numbers available for comparison. However, when evaluating his performance on tape, there should be no doubts about his athleticism as it is evident. Additionally, one area of concern lies in his pass-catching abilities. Currently, there is limited information regarding his proficiency in this aspect, as he has recorded just five catches over his past two seasons. We don’t have enough data to suggest he can’t do it, or he just wasn’t asked to catch the ball.
Fantasy Football Outlook
Assistance is required for McBride to secure playing time on the field. The current team composition includes Dalvin Cook, who is rumored to potentially face his release after June 1st. Nevertheless, even if such a scenario were to occur, McBride would still contend with Alexander Mattison, Kene Nwangwu, and Ty Chandler.
Presently, the likelihood of McBride delivering substantial value in re-draft leagues appears low. If Cook remains, it is probable that McBride doesn’t even make the team. Overall, given an opportunity, he may showcase his potential within an untested backfield. He can safely go undrafted in your traditional redraft fantasy football leagues.
Dynasty Outlook
In dynasty fantasy football leagues, the pivotal factor determining McBride’s value lies in whether he secures a spot on the team or not. As mentioned earlier, there are indications that Cook might be released. Additionally, Mattison also recently re-signed for two more years, making him a Viking for the foreseeable future. Nwangwu’s role primarily revolves around kick returning and serving as a change of pace back. Ultimately, McBride’s battle for a roster spot would be against Chandler, whom the front office seems to be very high on.
In Superflex leagues, it is advisable to consider selecting McBride between the middle of the third round and the end of the fourth round. In 1QB leagues, McBride should be taken in the third round. It is recommended to initially stash him on the taxi squad until his role on the Vikings’ roster becomes more clear. McBride possesses considerable talent; however, he requires a viable opportunity to fully showcase his abilities.
