Dynasty Rookie Profile – Garrett Wilson

Ohio State is producing plenty of receiver talent in this and upcoming draft class and Garrett Wilson is a prime example of that pipeline. It certainly helps when you have one of the top two quarterbacks of the likely 2023 draft class getting you the ball, but Wilson brings a variety of routes that will allow NFL teams to insert him into their offense.

What intrigues me about Wilson is his route tree. While at Ohio State, he was used in several ways, running slants, hitches, in routes, and go balls. That’s all just a fancy way of saying he was used in several different parts of the field, on short throws while playing a quick game, in the middle of the field, outside the numbers, and on deep routes.

In fact, much of the underneath and medium depth work enabled him to take the top off the offense, hitting the deep ball after drawing the secondary closer and closer. A great example of what I’m describing came when Ohio State played Michigan State. Wilson ran several short routes early, which lead the corners to creep up.

Then, on Wilson’s first quarter touchdown, the corner was lined up within five yards of Wilson, giving him the opportunity to quickly accelerate past the corner and open up for a deep ball. He was assisted by the safety being pulled away from his side of the ball, but those types of scheme decisions are exactly what NFL teams will look to bring out with him.

While we should be careful in searching for a Justin Jefferson or a Ja’Marr Chase out of this class (in the sense that they make immediate fantasy impacts), Wilson is a top prospect and has the potential to be a significant contributor for fantasy managers.
