Dynasty Rookie Profile – Isaiah Spiller

If you look at Isaiah Spiller‘s stat line, you might scratch your head and wonder why he is receiving such hype from the dynasty gurus and NFL Draft analysts. Take a look at the film and you start to get a clearer picture.

Spiller managed to hit the 1,000-yard mark in his final two seasons at Texas A&M, but only ranked 48th in rushing in 2021. But that doesn’t tell the full story. First off, Texas A&M split touches between Spiller and sophomore Devon Achane, with Spiller accounting for 43% of Texas A&M’s total rushes. Secondly, Texas A&M did not have what I’d consider a stellar offensive line, which is obviously a significant variable in rushing success. So where does that leave us with Spiller?

My first line of thinking is that I would be surprised to see Isaiah Spiller come in as a three-down running back. But I don’t expect that from most running backs in this class. At this point, I don’t see a Najee Harris-type player in this class. I think most likely this draft is going to produce several running backs that are stashes for most or all of 2022, and maybe standout late in the year or take a big step forward in year two or three.

With that in mind, there are several traits I like about Isaiah Spiller. First off, he is proficient in pass protection. I know fantasy leagues don’t score for that, but to me, it’s significant because of how teams will view that. I imagine Spiller will get more snaps because of his ability to provide chip help when taking routes and his blocking abilities. This will translate to increased target opportunities, providing a decent floor in PPR leagues.

He also is a patient runner, keeping his feet active while picking his best route upfield. These are positive traits that I think will serve him well in the NFL. That said, I see him playing a role in a running back by committee, likely as a number two at least to begin.

Currently, I have Spiller pegged as a second-round pick in dynasty, maybe a late first round. That will certainly shift depending on his landing spot after the NFL Draft. If he ends up with a team that has a good offensive line, he will move up my draft board because of the skill set he brings. Otherwise, he will fall to a late-round stash or a backup plan if my main targets are taken.
