Dynasty Rookie Profile: Luke Musgrave

Tight End – Oregon State

6’6, 250 lbs.

Strengths

Musgrave is a tight end out of Oregon State who is big, athletic, and has great hands. I could tell you to stop here and not overthink it, but as he isn’t guaranteed to be the TE1 in the class, there are more layers to this. He is versatile enough to be effective both in-line and spread out wide. To further elaborate on his hands, he makes active catches where he plucks the ball out of the air cleanly, ensuring higher odds of completion when contact occurs during the catch. Finally, he uses his size well in the vertical passing game to win matchups with his large frame.

Weaknesses

Musgrave will need more work with blocking, where the effort is there but the technique and strength are both lacking. Additionally, when it comes to down-the-field work, Musgrave needs to work on better angles to create more separation from defenders in routes.

NFL Fit and Draft Capital

He will be a late third-rounder in your upcoming dynasty rookie drafts outside of TE-Premium dynasty leagues and he will be a Day 3 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He is going to the Senior Bowl and will test well at the combine, so there is a path he could work his way to Day 2. His blocking will be big to improve as he will likely begin his career in two tight end sets.

In conclusion, the two items that most correlate with tight ends are athleticism and time to develop in the NFL. Musgrave is not going to cost you much, but he’s worth holding onto for two seasons and seeing how he develops. You may have found the answer in a position that has very few after the handful of the elite.
