Dynasty Rookie Profile: Tyjae Spears

Running Back – Tulane

5’10, 190 lbs

Strengths

Coming out of Tulane, Spears has track speed and accelerates to full speed if he can find even the smallest opening. He runs with a good pad level and shows good leg churn after contact. He is shifty in the open field, which could lead teams to try him in the return game. Furthermore, he shows good patience behind the line, and decisiveness to quickly shift from North to South.

The play isn’t over if Spears gets caught up in traffic, as he has the ability to bounce the play outside or a deep-cut opposite flow of traffic. Finally, he has great ball security with only one career fumble in 400+ carries. 

Weaknesses

For Spears, size will be a major factor in the narrative around him. This as well as his broad jump will be some of the most vital measurements that he will take at NFL Combine. If he comes in under 200 pounds, he will likely be stuck with the ‘change of pace’ label until he can prove otherwise in the NFL. Finally, his pass protection needs improvement at the next level to stay on the field early.

NFL Fit and Draft Capital

Overall, Spears is a home run threat with the ball in his hands. He also shows great running outside the guards. There is a path for a three-down role for him, but won’t be the best in short-yard and goal-line situations in the NFL. His talent says 2nd Round in the 2023 NFL Draft, but realistically in this class, he is more likely to end up in the 3rd Round. 

His Pro comparison for me is Aaron Jones. With great contact balance and great hands, he is currently the last back I have projected to have the path for over 15 touches a game, realistically. Should this happen you should absolutely prioritize getting him cheap in the third round of your upcoming dynasty rookie drafts if you are lucky enough to have those rookie drafts prior to the NFL draft. With a 2nd Round NFL Draft capital, his value will vault him up to the late first round of your upcoming dynasty rookie drafts.
