Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups — Week 3 (2023)
Welcome back to another edition of Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups. We’re heading into Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season. For your fantasy football teams, adding the right players off the waiver wire is absolutely crucial to your fantasy football success. Follow along with us all season long and we’ll help you make your way into the fantasy football playoffs.
Week 2 was an exciting week, to say the least. Tee Higgins and others bounced back while Calvin Ridley had a back-to-earth game. You, like many others, tried to beat the waiver wire early. Hopefully. Especially if you follow me on X, I mentioned a few players to be added to the end of your rosters.
This week’s waiver wire isn’t as appealing as Week 2’s Waiver Wire Article. Both Puka Nakua and Kyren Williams excelled and look like potential league winners. For those of you who spent a lot of your budget on those players, my hat is off to you. For Joshua Kelley and some others, that’s a whole other story.
No matter our record, there are always areas to improve in. Regardless of your situation, here are players you should look to add for Week 2 based on CBS Fantasy Sports roster percentages. These players are listed in order of priority. Let’s get right into it with the top waiver wire pickups for your fantasy football teams as we head into Week 3.
Quarterback Waiver Wire Pickups
Baker Mayfield, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (35% Rostered)
Many laughed when I was all about drafting Mayfield as a QB2. Over the last two weeks, he has scored over 20 fantasy points. In Week 1, Mayfield was saved by two touchdowns. However, in Week 2 he passed for over 300 yards. The connection he and Mike Evans have this year looks to be turning into something special. For those with Anthony Richardson as their QB1, should look to add Mayfield. He’s worth adding for up to 5% of your remaining FAAB.
Sam Howell, QB, Washington Commanders (35% Rostered)
The way Howell has been poised over his first two starts has him looking like someone we need to take more seriously. He just beat the Denver Broncos in Denver and looked confident. So far Howell has thrown for 501 yards and has four total touchdowns. Yet, we are still waiting to see that rushing upside that he showed at North Carolina. Still, the Commanders are 2-0 and Howell will get a good test next week against the Bills. He’s worth adding for up to 5% of your remaining FAAB.
Running Back Waiver Wire Pickups
Jerome Ford, RB, Cleveland Browns (24% Rostered)
You just hate to see it. Nick Chubb went down with what should be a season-ending knee injury. Ford on the other hand dominated the Steelers’ defense rushing the ball 16 times for 106 yards along with catching three passes for 25 yards and a touchdown. He filled in just well for Chubb and is easily looking like the new RB1 here.
That being said, former Brown Kareem Hunt is still a free agent and could dampen Ford’s outcome. However, I don’t see that happening as Hunt may have burnt bridges last season when he was trying to seek a trade. He should be added for 40%-50% of your remaining FAAB, but won’t be surprised if he’s closer to 100%.
Zack Moss, RB, Indianapolis Colts (57% Rostered)
This game finally showed a featured running back. Although, with Anthony Richardson being knocked out of the game, the Colts relied heavily on Moss giving him 18 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. Adding to that, he caught all four of his targets for another 19 yards. Moss can be viewed as a low-end RB2 until Jonathan Taylor returns. We have at least two more weeks to have Moss as a starter. All things considered, he’s worth adding for around 15% of your remaining FAAB.
Tyjae Spears, RB, Tennessee Titans (53% Rostered)
He’s one of the perfect handcuffs and needs to be rostered in all leagues. Even with Derrick Henry being the RB1, Spears has made an impact good for eight rushes for 49 yards. To date, Spears has 11 rushes for 76 yards along with three receptions for seven yards. He’s getting on the field more and with the amount of carries Henry gets, Spears is one injury away from being a league winner. I would spend 5% of your remaining FAAB.
Wide Receiver Waiver Wire Pickups
Tutu Atwell, WR, Los Angeles Rams (48% Rostered)
Now it’s been rookie sensation Puka Nacua who has the spotlight on him, but let’s not sleep on Atwell. Atwell managed seven catches for 77 yards against a tough 49ers defense. Are the Rams a team to take seriously? I think so. As long as Cooper Kupp is out, Atwell has a spot in this offense. He’s worth adding for up to 5% of your remaining FAAB.
Jayden Reed, WR, Green Bay Packers (22% Rostered)
Last week, I mentioned before the game that Reed was a player who should be added to the end of your roster. Now, he’s a Packer who went off for two touchdowns. However, Reed led the team with eight targets turning it into four receptions for 37 yards. The Packers will spread the ball around quite a bit, but it looks like Reed is the WR2 in this offense. He should be added for up to 5% of your remaining FAAB
Nathaniel Dell, WR, Houston Texans (24% Rostered)
Another wide receiver who I said should be added was Tank Dell and he did very well today. This Texans offense is looking to be always trailing so the receiving game should thrive. Seeing a team-high 10 targets, and tying for a team-high with nine receptions. Although he was well behind Nico Collins in yardage, he still managed 72 yards. Unfortunately, he may not lead the team every week in targets, but he is certainly a player to pick up for your fantasy teams. Overall, he should be added for up to 10% of your remaining FAAB.
Josh Reynolds, WR, Detroit Lions (20% Rostered)
While I was expecting rookie tight end Sam LaPorta to have a bigger role, it’s been wide receiver Josh Reynolds who has been getting a lot of action. I shrugged off Week 1 as a performance where he had seven targets ( four receptions) and turned them into 80 yards. Now he popped once again in Week 2 catching five-of-six targets for 66 yards and two touchdowns. He’s an important part of the offense and let’s not forget he was also with Jared Goff at one point on the Rams. He should be added for up to 5% of your remaining FAAB.
Tight End Waiver Wire Pickups
Hunter Henry, TE, New England Patriots (61% Rostered)
One tight end we need to take seriously here is Hunter Henry. We all loved the ex-Charger, but he fell out of our good graces quickly after signing with the Patriots. Now here we are with back-to-back games with six-plus targets, over 50 yards, and another touchdown. He won’t have a touchdown every week, but Henry has matched his touchdown total (two) from last season. He should be added for up to 10% of your remaining FAAB.
Zach Ertz, TE, Arizona Cardinals (26% Rostered)
Surprisingly, Zach Ertz has seen 18 targets in the first two games of the season. Last week he turned 10 targets into six receptions for 21 yards, but it had my ears perked. I had to see it again to see if it repeated Week 2 against the New York Giants and that he did. Ertz was targeted eight times and turned up a better game with six catches for 56 yards. Touchdowns will eventually come, but in PPR he’s worth adding. He should be added for 1% of your remaining FAAB.
Taysom Hill, TE, New Orleans Saints (34% Rostered)
While many will be chasing Tony Jones and his two touchdowns, I highly recommend adding Hill instead of Jones as he led the team with 75 yards on eight attempts. Although Alvin Kamara is only one game away from returning his suspension, Hill is the wildcat here as he can run, pass, and catch the ball. He could be a one-week rental or a Juwan Johnson replacement. All things considered, he should be added for around 5% of your remaining FAAB.
