Saquon Barkley 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
When Saquon Barkley erupted onto the scene in 2018, many thought he would be the 1.01 for years to come. Viewed as a generational talent, Barkley has had multiple years with injuries piling up. Ultimately, his best season came back in 2020 and included an unfortunate ACL tear.
However, doubters were put to rest as Barkley bounced back with over 1,600 total yards and 10 touchdowns. Going on to finish as the RB6 in non-PPR and RB5 in PPR leagues. The pieces that new coach Brian Daboll added to rebuild the Giants’ offense helped. This year, Barkley should re-establish himself as one of the best running backs in fantasy football.
Now, workhorse running backs are hard to get. Last season, Barkley was one of eight running backs with 250+ carries (295). Not to mention, he was fourth in rushing yards with 1,312. Additionally, he had 57 receptions, also good for top-10 for running backs.
With no true threat behind Barkley, he will once again look to dominate this backfield for the 2023 season. Let’s break down his fantasy football outlook for the 2023 NFL season, as well as his long-term dynasty outlook.
Fantasy Football Outlook for 2023
Going into the final hours of the franchise tag deadline, many thought the Giants and Barkley would have struck a deal. They didn’t and the running back world was flipped. However, a little over a week later the Giants star struck a one-year $11 million deal.
The New York Giants knew they had to do it. Last season, Barkley averaged a career-high 18.4 carries per game. It makes sense why the Giants gave Barkley the one-year deal as he’s the focal point of the offense.
Those of you who were able to draft Barkley any later than the first round of any fantasy football drafts just got a steal. Barkley remains a top-five fantasy running back worth drafting in the first round. He should be a fantasy star once again. Being in Daboll’s offense Barkley should once again be north of 350 opportunities, which is rare to see among NFL running backs.
Right now, Barkley is going off the board as one of the top running backs in our up-to-date 2023 PPR fantasy football rankings.
Dynasty Football Outlook
Going into his age-26 season, Barkley will once again be a dominant force on the field. With Daniel Jones coming off a contract extension, we know at least the ban will be back together for at least the 2023 season. Yet, we could be at the same point again if the New York Giants decide to franchise tag Barkley once again. Ultimately, Barkley still has a very solid long-term dynasty outlook.
However, the Giants and Barkley can start contract negotiations after the 2023 regular season ends. Barkley turns 27 in February next year so he is at the edge of being past his prime. Don’t fret though as he still has a lot of tread left on the tires and shows no signs of slowing down.
Even today with what we know now, Barkley is still a top-five running back worth taking at the end of the first round of dynasty start ups. You can question it all you want, thinking he will be tagged once again next offseason but if you like winning fantasy football trophies, get Barkley on your team as a solid piece to build around.
