Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em Quarterbacks – Fantasy Football (Week 9)

Start-Em-Sit-Em-Quarterbacks-Fantasy-Football-Week-9

Welcome to another edition of our weekly fantasy football Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em. In this series, we’re here to help you set your lineups and put yourself in a position to win your fantasy football matchups each week. With eight weeks in the books, it’s time to take a look at quarterbacks for Week 9 of the 2023 NFL and fantasy football season.

These players will be those “less-obvious” players that you’re on the fence about starting as your WR3 or Flex type of options. Nobody needs to tell you to start Justin Jefferson or Christian McCaffrey.

Week 9 bye weeks: 49ers, Broncos, Lions, Jaguars

Stay tuned for updates throughout the week.

Start ‘Em

Zach Wilson QB – New York Jets vs. Los Angeles Chargers

I know what you’re thinking. Did I see anything in that game last week against the Giants? There was hardly any offensive output by either team, and it’s not like the Giants have an outstanding defense. However, even in that offensive snore-fest, Zach Wilson had a fantasy-relevant game, throwing for 240 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, putting up 25 yards on the ground. Overall, Wilson headlines our Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em article this week, for good reason.

Wilson has been putting up about 11 fantasy football points per game, which isn’t great, but I expect that to be higher this week. He’s facing the Los Angeles Chargers who are allowing a league-high 22 points per game to opposing quarterbacks. With the bye weeks starting back up again, and if you’re in a pinch, I would consider starting Wilson.

Will Levis QB – Tennessee Titans @ Pittsburgh Steelers

I’ll bet you all had this on your fantasy football bingo cards. Will Levis became the third quarterback in NFL history to throw four touchdowns in his debut, joining the small club occupied by Marcus Mariota and Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton. With Derrick Henry notching 4.6 yards per carry and DeAndre Hopkins schooling defenders, a prime-time outburst could lock Levis into the starting role for the remainder of the season.

Pittsburgh, who faces Levis and company on Thursday Night Football, has been a better quarterback matchup in recent weeks. In a four-game span, they’ve allowed 267.8 passing yards per game and 13.9 yards per completion. So, even with a run-centric game plan, there’ll be enough opportunity for Levis to produce well for fantasy. He’s also a smash start in 2QB and Superflex leagues this week. All things considered, start ’em this week.

Sit ‘Em

Geno Smith QB – Seattle Seahawks @ Baltimore Ravens

Geno Smith has been a fairly consistent quarterback so far this season, with a Consistency Score rank of 21 and averaging about 13 points per game. Although he’s been putting up numbers the last three weeks, averaging about 250 yards passing and 1.5 touchdowns per game. However, last week he threw two interceptions and added a fumble.

This week Smith faces the toughest defense for quarterbacks in the Baltimore Ravens. They are currently only allowing 11 points per game to opposing quarterbacks and I expect Smith to be shut down by them this week. I’d look elsewhere if possible this week, such as the waiver wire.

Kyler Murray QB – Arizona Cardinals @ Cleveland Browns

This could be considered low-hanging fruit, but if Kyler Murray is suddenly named the starter for Week 9 there will be fantasy managers who panic start him. Don’t be one of them because this already feels like a trap. Head coach Jonathan Gannon originally stated that Joshua Dobbs would remain the starter only to later backtrack and say it could be Murray or rookie Clayton Tune. Now, Dobbs has been traded to the Minnesota Vikings.

Cleveland is no ordinary opponent. They’ve caused seven turnovers by quarterbacks in their last three games and the only signal caller to surpass 250 passing yards was Gardner Minshew in that awkward 39-38 affair in Week 7. If Murray returns this week, the matchup and the rust make him unstartable to me.
