2023 Senior Bowl Takeaways – Day 1 of Practice

2023-senior-Bowl-Takeaways-Day-1-of-Practice

Day 1 of the 2023 Senior Bowl is officially in the books. As for the weather, there was a chance of rain, but that dropped drastically as the day progressed. There were highs in the low to mid-70s with 100% humidity. For the full schedule for the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl, click here. As for some of the top players to keep an eye on, click here. Here’s a breakdown of the action from Day 1 of Practice at the 2023 Senior Bowl.

Quarterbacks

No quarterbacks have blown me away today, but wasn’t really expecting them to. They’ve all done what they were supposed to. If you’re looking for which quarterbacks you should keep an eye on at the Senior Bowl, Jaren Hall and Jake Haener come to mind.

Jaren Hall is known for his efficiency. He has a career completion percentage of over 65%, posting 52 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during that time. Hall was considered a fringe 1st Round quarterback at the beginning of the year, but since then those talks have cooled off. A big weekend of pinpoint ball placement though could get that conversation going again.

Jake Haener is an accurate passer who stands tall in the pocket to deliver a pass in the face of pressure. Haener’s accuracy can be shown by his career 68.2% completion percentage. That’s with his completing 72% this past season. He is an older prospect in this draft class, but with him showing his arm strength is necessary for the NFL, he has a chance to shoot up boards.

Running Backs

Roschon Johnson looks quick and explosive in individual drills. Camerun Peoples is taller than I realized, feet seem slow in bag drills. Johnson has looked good all day. Easily separating from linebackers in 1-on-1s. He was hitting the hole hard and fast in the team scrimmage.

Eric Gray is a surprisingly fast, long-stride runner. Tyjae Spears has some soft hands and fluid body control catching passes. Chris Rodriguez Jr. looks like he may have tweaked something. He seemed to not be pushing full speed and isn’t finishing through the end zone like the other guys.

There’s the Tyjae Spears I was waiting to see all day! He was moving well through the tight gaps.

Wide Receivers

Dontayvion Wicks looks great out of his breaks, probably the most impressive wide receiver against the air. He put his toes in the ground on a comeback route that would’ve sent most NFL defensive backs to the ground. Jalen Wayne had a nice two-toe catch on the sidelines. I was worried about his speed against better competition but he’s looking good. That being said, he’s always had great hands.

Jonathan Mingo also made three or four nice catches today. To wrap the day up, the defense won the final 1-on-1s to make the offense do push-ups.
