8 Tight End Sleepers for Fantasy Football in 2023

7-Tight-End-Sleepers-for-Fantasy-Football-in-2023

If you’re heading into your fantasy football drafts dead set on drafting Travis Kelce in the first round, or Mark Andrews in the third, then this article might not be for you. However, for everyone else dealing with the dirge at tight end, I’m going to make things a little easier for you. I’m going to find the best 8 streaming options for the tight end position. Sounds nice right? One less thing to worry about when digesting copious amounts of wings, nachos, and draft day beverages.

Furthermore, I’m going to put them into four pairs. Using our D-PAC Strength of Schedule tool to find which pairs of tight ends complement each other. By doing this, you can bounce them in and out of your lineups targeting plus matchups all season. Overall, these will be late-round tight ends who can help you win your fantasy football leagues this year.

Jake Ferguson and Luke Musgrave

This duo is ranked fourth on my list and comes with a lot of uncertainty. If you’re looking for upside and like taking risks, then these are two fantasy football breakout candidates. As expected, there are a lot of unknowns between the two of them.

Jake Ferguson has only one NFL season under his belt and it wasn’t exactly eye-popping. In 16 games, with 8 starts, he saw only 22 targets. He caught 19 of them for 174 yards and a mere two touchdowns. Needless to say, that leaves a lot to be desired. However, in 2022 he was playing behind Dalton Schultz, who played in 15 games and was the go-to receiving tight end at the time. Schultz finished the year tied for 13th in fantasy points per game and finished with 35% of games played being a Top-12 tight end. Now, he has moved on down the road to join the Houston Texans, making Ferguson the number one tight end for the team.

With the third-best strength of schedule (SOS) for tight end matchups, Ferguson has plenty of opportunity to make a sophomore splash. The Cowboys may not have any plus matchups. But they also don’t have any matchups you want to avoid until Week 9. And Considering he is going undrafted according to our current ADP, using one of your final picks on Ferguson comes with inherently zero risk.

Musgrave is even more daunting to draft. As he is a rookie and any savvy fantasy manager is well aware that rookie tight ends have historically not fared well. However, the second-round draft pick does have a few positives here to help ease your nerves. One, the offseason hype train on the rookie tight end has been cruising at top speed all summer long. Including reports that Jordan Love is going to “keep feeding” Musgrave, after targeting him on three of his first six passes in the preseason opener. Musgrave was also out with the first team offense for all 12 of the snaps Jordan Love was under center. All signs are pointing to Musgrave being a big part of this new Green Bay offense.

With an ADP at the end of the 12th round, again, you aren’t investing a huge amount of draft capital into Musgrave, should he not pan out. And similar to Ferguson’s SOS, he doesn’t see any of the top matchups to target with tight end. However, he does have large stretches of pretty neutral opponents. Most importantly, his stretch of nice matchups comes at the back end of the season, whereas Fergusons kicks off the year that way. All things considered, this makes them a very complimentary duo. It also gives the rookie a few more games to get up to “game speed” in the NFL and work out any growing pains.

You may be more likely to have positive thoughts about these two tight ends in dynasty leagues. However, if you’re punting the position, these two tight ends are intriguing, to say the least.

Logan Thomas and Noah Fant

This next pair has a few more years of experience than the number four duo on this list. However, they still aren’t players one would feel a complete sense of ease drafting. Particularly the oft-injured Logan Thomas.

That being said, when Thomas is healthy, he can be a true fantasy asset. While 2022 was a lost season for the Commanders, in 2021 his 5.9 fantasy points per game was ranked 14th and he finished with 50% of games played in the Top-12 at his position. In 2020 he ranked 12th in fantasy points per game, and had the eighth-highest Consistency Score at his position (2.88). Even better, he finished in the Top-12 in 47% of games played.

This year Thomas is currently going undrafted. It could be injury concerns or just Commander concerns. Either way, his cost is nothing and Washington’s SOS for the tight end position is one of the best in the league. Additionally, Thomas has five of his first seven matchups against the top teams to target for tight end, and 11 of those matchups on the whole year.

Noah Fant has been a bit of a letdown since joining the Seattle Seahawks. Well, really since entering the NFL. But part of that blame is on us, the fantasy football community. We need to remember these tight ends take more time to adjust to the pros than other positions. Noah Fant is now in his fifth year and the lead tight end for a surprisingly emergent Seahawks offense. Even in 2022, he had 3 different weeks at the back half of the season where he popped for a Top-12 finish. With another offseason to connect with Geno Smith, Fant could be looking at a big year. Ok, “big” might be stretching it. But I’ll take a “serviceable” year.

Of course, for this exercise, the most important part of the equation is that most of his matchups where you would want to stream him are weeks where you would want an option other than Logan Thomas. The only week these two don’t line up perfectly is Week 5 when Fant will be on bye and Thomas has a bad matchup against Chicago. But if you can get through that one speedbump, the rest of the season the two make quite the pair.

Hayden Hurst and Gerald Everett

This pairing warmed my cold, dark, two sizes too small, heart. If you’re new to Faceoff Sports Network, first off, WELCOME! Secondly, you should know that every year we pair up with Hayden Hurst and his foundation and do a whole Mental Health Podathon raising funds for his foundation and shedding a light on mental health. So when I saw just how much green was lighting up the SOS for the Carolina Panthers, I was stoked for our good friend Mr. Hurst.

Sneaking into the Top-10 best SOS for tight ends, Hurst might be a true sleeper in fantasy football this season. Coming off a year where he pulled in 52 receptions for 414 yards and two touchdowns, Hursts’ current ADP is in the 15th round of drafts. However, that was on the Bengals last season with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins clamoring for the ball. Now his biggest threats for targets are the elder stateman Adam Thielen and DJ Chark. Neither of which compares to either of the two Bengals receivers. Overall, there is a real chance Hurst finishes the season with the second-most targets on this offense.

Furthermore, just look at all of that pretty green when we check his SOS. 10 games are against teams you want to target when streaming the tight end position. 10! Albeit, a bit “boom or bust” as if it’s not a positive matchup for Hurst, it is a negative one. Additionally, he doesn’t really have any neutral matchups heading into 2023.

But that’s A-OK, because Gerald Everett, whose current ADP is in the 13th round has such a complimentary schedule that you can easily bounce between the two. Everett had a true “up and down” season in 2022, as evidenced in his CS ranking of 19th among tight ends. While his floor may have been low, he still had six games as a No.1 tight end or better. Including three of those where he met that “elite” mark on are visuals (Top-5 at the position).

A big part of that success stems from the fact that we had the eighth most targets among tight ends with 87 in 2022. Everett is heavily involved in this offense and should continue to be in 2023. Match that with a soft SOS and the fact that his best matchups coincide with Hursts’ bye week and worst matchups, aside from Week 11, and you’ve got quite the dynamic duo to bounce between.

Austin Hooper and Gerald Everett

I’m doubling up a bit here with Everett as his schedule just lined up too well, despite the Chargers coming in 19th overall in terms of SOS at tight end. With that, if you’re able to grab Everett in the 13th round but miss out on Hurst, don’t panic. Austin Hooper is currently going undrafted and has an even better SOS than Hurst.

austin-hooper-fantasy-football-2023

With the exodus of Darren Waller a black hole-sized target hole has opened up. With that, Hooper gets to step into that void in hopes of a bounce-back season after perpetually letting the fantasy community down. Additionally, the Las Vegas Raiders have the second-best SOS for tight ends, behind only the Chicago Bears. Let’s face it, the hype train is off the rails for Cole Kmet, so you’re not drafting him as a streamer.

With only three games in the red, plus a bye week, Hooper is going to be in streaming contention almost every week. Additionally, with just Davante Adams established in this offense, Jakobi Meyers has a nice opportunity to be the No.2 receiver in Vegas. In his first year in the silver and black, and a wayward Josh Jacobs brooding in some far-flung realm, there is a real possibility of Hooper seeing north of 80 or 90 targets this year.  If that ends up being the case, then just from pure volume alone, he’ll nearly be a weekly starter.

Finally, if you want to avoid him for those weeks where the matchups aren’t truly juicy, Everett’s schedule lines up perfectly to complement Hoopers’ negative matchups. Or vice versa, depending on which player pans out as the “better” pick. All things considered, these are some tight ends who are solid late-round options either together or by themselves.
