Fantasy Football Outlook

Does Derrick Henry still have it? It seems like we have been waiting for the other shoe to drop for this almost 30-year-old running back for the last couple of years, but the King is still going strong. Last season he was RB4 following a “down” year of RB16 in 2021, simply because of missing half the season due to injury.

Let’s get into Henry’s potential outlook for the upcoming fantasy football season.

2023 Fantasy Outlook

Henry is clearly still the center of the Titans’ offense, and it’s clear that Tennesee believes that they still stand a chance to make a Super Bowl run with the addition of DeAndre Hopkins to the wide receiver room. Even with the superstar wide receiver, the offense should still run through Henry, who, in 2022, had 89% of the total running back rushing attempts of the team. An added bonus was seeing Henry appear in the passing game. Last season he was targeted 41 times, a career-high, with an 80% catch percentage and 12.1 average yards per reception. That was the most among running backs with at least 20 targets.

Furthermore, the players behind Henry also do not communicate any sense of confidence. The Titans have a rookie in Tyjae Spears, then Hassan Haskins, Julius Chesnut, and Jonathan Ward. Henry will still be the clear workhorse back in Tennesee this season. Henry has an average consensus ranking of RB9 this year, with one person putting him as high as RB4. It is clear that Henry has a very high ceiling in redraft leagues, once again.

Dynasty Outlook

Henry is approaching age 30, when running backs frequently fall off a cliff. For dynasty fantasy football purposes, he is a solid cornerstone for a “win now” team. However, if you are building for the future, you should quickly look to trade him away for some young talent and draft picks.

This season is the last year of his four-year contract signed in 2020, and it is difficult even to say where Henry could be playing next year. That uncertainty, coupled with his age, should be enough for you to say farewell if you are rebuilding. Better to trade him a year too early, where you can actually get a return than be a year too late.
