Strengths

Xavier Hutchinson is a wide receiver from Iowa State. He is great against press coverage and uses his arms well to physically engage defensive backs in order to resume his routes. His hands are strong and used away from his body often. Hutchinson catches the ball with ease and doesn’t suffer from concentration drops. This also has allowed him to have a great catch radius, allowing quarterbacks to throw more 50/50 balls in his direction.

Furthermore, Hutchinson does well after the catch, often getting screen passes in the Iowa State offense. This lets him use his size to shed tackles in 1 on 1 situations with defensive backs. His strong hands allow him to have a large catch radius and thrive with contested catches. He also has no issues being the defensive focus, gaining over 100 receptions and nearly 1,200 yards on an Iowa State team with a sub-.500 record in 2022.

Weaknesses

Hutchinson won’t take the top off of the defense. More of his game is based on physicality and less on technique and agility. He doesn’t settle in the zone coverage to allow his quarterback to make an easier completion to him. His route tree featured a lot of either shallow or deep routes, not showing as many that rely on him making a 90-degree cut once his momentum is going.

NFL Draft Capital and Fit

Being a redshirt senior is sure to depress Hutchinson’s rookie draft value unless he is given peak NFL Draft capital. In the NFL, teams will want to use him as a red zone option and a possession receiver. He currently projects as a late 2nd Round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and middle to late 2nd in your dynasty rookie drafts. His draft stock should go up with him currently being the best wide receiver scheduled to attend the Senior Bowl this year in February.
