More importantly, they may have an inflated dynasty value at the moment. Let’s look at seven quarterbacks who are sell-high candidates this offseason and why they may be movable sooner rather than later.
Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins signal caller Tua Tagovailoa has finished as a top 15 fantasy quarterback the past two seasons and appears on track to sign a long-term extension with Miami. That window of production coincides with the Dolphin’s 2022 acquisition of All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Tagovailoa also proved an ability to stay healthy in 2023 by starting all 17 games. However, while he has seen a career resurgence following early question marks, his fantasy football outlook seemingly has stagnated from an offseason dynasty value standpoint. Tagovailoa currently ranks as the QB15 on Keep Trade Cuts crowd-sourced dynasty rankings, which shows trepidation from managers about his upside, despite a top-10 fantasy football finish in 2023.
Tagovailoa and the Dolphins may also see the offense massively change over the next few years following the impact of his new contract. Offensive stalwarts Raheem Mostert and Hill are beginning to show longevity concerns. With a talented quarterback class coming in and Tagovailoa seemingly hovering around QB2 values each offseason, now may be the time to capitalize on his youth and projected long-term commitment for a fantasy trade.
Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence has been a consistent yet frustrating quarterback to roster through his first three years in the NFL. Specifically, this was epitomized by a QB13 fantasy finish in 2023 following a top-eight finish in 2022. However, the positives with arm talent and ability are clear with Lawrence.
Furthermore, the Jaguars displayed a willingness to throw often in 2023. Notably, Lawrence threw the ball over 30 times in all but four starts. Despite those positives of passing volume this past season, Lawrence’s turnover woes lowered his fantasy football ceiling every week. While he was able to throw for 21 touchdown passes, Lawrence operates more as a QB2 in fantasy from week to week. Last year, he averaged 16.14 fantasy points per game average.
Nevertheless, Lawrence is still highly valued, as evidenced by his QB12 dynasty ranking on Keep Trade Cut. With the team revamping the offense and bringing in some youth to grow with Lawrence, now may be the time to capitalize on the hype of his surroundings. In his three seasons, he has shown a fantasy floor, but outside of a few flashes, Lawrence hasn’t shown high-end QB1 numbers week in and week out for fantasy. However, he’s being valued as a QB1 for dynasty purposes, which could mean it’s a decent time to sell high.
Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles and Keep Trade Cut’s current QB5 is certainly the highest-valued and most productive quarterback we will discuss on this list. That reputation is deserved with Jalen Hurts producing top-three quarterback seasons for fantasy in both 2022 and 2023.
Hurts should have A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith in this offense for years after each signed extensions this offseason. Those two receivers are welcome continuity for Hurts in an offense that will look noticeably different from last season, both on the offensive line and in the backfield. The Eagles will be looking to replace the leadership and grit on the line following the retirement of All-Pro Center Jason Kelce, a key player in Hurt’s improvement over the last four seasons.
The addition of running back Saquon Barkley is also likely to change the offense, maybe signaling less emphasis on the rushes and hits Hurts is taking in the running game. All these changes may see Hurts face some challenges production-wise in 2024, especially if the struggling offense that closed the 2023 season rears its head to open the new season.
With potential emergences from players like Caleb Williams or resurgence from other quarterbacks, that QB5 value Hurts currently has may gradually find itself lowering over the next 9 months. Now may be the time to pivot and tier down to another talented quarterback, while rounding up more assets in the process.
Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love has been receiving plenty of love from the dynasty community over the last few months, following a productive postseason run for the Packers. In two playoff games against the Cowboys and 49ers, Love was able to throw for five touchdowns and 466 passing yards on only 37 completed passes, showing efficiency and productivity that has certainly helped prop him up to the current QB10 in dynasty value.
That currently puts him above names such as the previously mentioned Tagovailoa and Lawrence, as well as the consistent Brock Purdy and explosive Kyler Murray.
While Love did finish the season strong and was able to spread the ball around, expecting those sorts of large touchdown totals week after week in 2024 may be a misread of this Packer’s offseason. The Packers moved on from Aaron Jones this offense and invested in what they are hoping will be a more durable option in Josh Jacobs.
Don’t be afraid to test out Love’s trade market at QB10 prices, as we can expect a newly paid Jacobs to take a big role in this offense. In addition to Jacobs is a newly drafted running back MarShawn Lloyd, the only offensive skill player to be drafted by Green Bay on the first two days. The Packers will spread the offensive duties around, and Jacobs may be a bit of a touchdown vulture biting into the 32-touchdown season from Love in 2023.
Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts have built up an offense set for the future, with perhaps the brightest star of the bunch being talented quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson boasted a high-upside fantasy outlook each time he saw the field in 2023, showing skills with his arm and his legs for the Colts.
While he did show electric playmaking, Richardson also struggled to stay on the field throughout his four-game debut, ultimately being shut down to receive shoulder surgery before Week 5 of the NFL season. Despite his rushing-dominated playstyle seemingly being a risk for injury each time he does run, Richardson finds himself as the QB9 in fantasy value on Keep Trade Cut. This is partly due to the upside in Richardson’s rushing, as well as the offense the Colts are primed to field in 2024.
With Michael Pittman Jr. signing an extension this offseason and Jonathon Taylor currently healthy, this Colts offense is trending up and the result is a highly valued quarterback. Unfortunately, it’s hard to see a perfect winning scenario with Richardson as a fantasy asset. We all want him to take fewer hits, and he has a talented running back who the Colts will likely lean on more this upcoming season.
Anthony Richardson Dynasty Trade Outlook
If Richardson does get reigned in and this team’s scheme becomes more reserved, the focus on the rushing game that was on the quarterback early last season will likely shift to Taylor from the beginning. Meanwhile, if he does run the same and plays with reckless abandon, Richardson will always be a high-upside quarterback who offers tremendous risk week to week to be out of the lineup.
Selling him at a QB9 price with such a low production point to this point in his career is probably the more savvy move at this time. The likely best-case scenario for Richardons career health-wise is to funnel the offense through Taylor first and foremost, and that may not translate into consistent fantasy points for us managers weekly from the quarterback.
Gardner Minshew & Aidan O’Connell, Las Vegas Raiders
These last two names aren’t highly valued on Keep Trade Cut, but they do find themselves embroiled in one of the few starter battles at the position this upcoming summer. Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell are QB35 and QB37 on Keep Trade Cut, respectively. While that may not sound like a sell-high, I think it’s fair to say neither of these quarterbacks has shown enough ability in fantasy to be regarded as an almost top-30 valued quarterback.
The purpose behind these two names included in this article is to emphasize a selling window over the rookie draft period. Both of these names carry a certain amount of value right now, purely due to the Raiders not addressing the quarterback position in this draft. Minshew feels like an early leader for the job due to the Raider’s financial commitment, but O’Connell is the incumbent starter from the end of 2023.
Dynasty Trades: How To Value Quarterbacks
In the end, neither of these guys may end up being the starter this season. With the ever-changing landscape of the quarterback position in the league, selling these bit parts who don’t boast franchise-level talent at the position would be a smart move sooner rather than later. Finding that owner willing to give a stray second-rounder for Minshew won’t be easy, but they are out there, especially as the rookies get drafted and managers need to start finding bridge options for their dynasty team.
Finding long-term quarterbacks who provide and are worth holding is not easy, and a couple on this list may end up being smarter holds than sells, each trade is a risk of course. Overall, it’s never easy to sell talented players but sometimes the package in return or the assets in return are too good to not consider. It’s fun to be a fan of our assets on fantasy teams, but selling one of these high-end assets for three to four more bites at high-end asset apple can pay off for your teams in the long run.
