Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 14
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire
In fantasy baseball, the waiver wire is a list of players who are not currently on any team’s roster. Players are added to the waiver wire when they are dropped by a team, or when they are free agents who have not yet been claimed by a team.
To add a player from the waiver wire, you must submit a waiver claim. Waiver claims are processed in order of priority, with the team with the highest waiver priority getting the first crack at the player. If multiple teams submit waiver claims for the same player, the player will be awarded to the team with the highest waiver priority.
We are coming up on the All-Star Weekend and we have seen a lot of minor league call-ups this season. Jordan Westburg is the most recent big-name call-up, and I am sure more are to come. As we get closer to the all-star break, scan those waiver wires by rostered percentage and see if any big names got dropped.
Waiver Wire Hitters
Jordan Westburg, 2B/SS/3B, Baltimore Orioles
First up and the top priority on the waiver wire, is Jordan Westburg. He received the call-up last week and is a must-add in all formats. The highly touted prospect can play all over the infield and has a lot of value in that regard. Additionally, he has played in three games up to the weekend and is batting .417 with two RBIs and three hits on 12 at-bats. On top of that, he has only struck out once and walked twice. Needless to say, Westburg should bring you a high on-base percentage, and a good batting average. He’s the top add for your fantasy baseball teams this week.
Jeimer Candelario, 3B, Washington Nationals
Jeimer Candelario is someone I am putting on here for a few reasons. Not only does he have a good stat line, but this is a name that could be brought up closer to the trade deadline. Candelario could potentially be traded to a better lineup. For that reason, I would try to roster him sooner than later.
On the season, he is batting .263 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs. Additionally, he has four stolen bases and has scored 40 runs. In the last few days, he has stolen two bases (4 total for the season) and could add this element to his game.
Ha-Seong Kim, 2B/3B, San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres are having a down year so far. Ha-Seong Kim however, is having a very good season so far and needs to be more rostered. He is batting .258 with 9 home runs and 30 RBIs. Furthermore, he has 13 stolen bases on the season and is a great source for stolen bases if needed. With this pace, he could potentially be a 20-home run, 20 stolen base player. He heads to Cincinnati this weekend which is a great hitter’s ballpark.
Will Benson, OF, Cincinnati Reds
Will Benson makes this list as someone who you should be keeping an eye on all over. Benson has played in 35 games this season, batting .278 with three home runs and seven RBIs. He has five stolen bases and fifteen walks in 90 at-bats. While not seeing every day playing time, he has been heating up at the plate. In his previous four games, he went 5-12 with four runs scored, a home run, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Keep an eye on Benson in deeper formats of fantasy baseball leagues.
TJ Friedl, OF, Cincinnati Reds
TJ Friedl was on my list last week. He is in a platoon situation where he does not see starts regularly. However, his stat line suggests he needs to be playing more, and rostered. He is batting .320 on the season with 203 at-bats, 6 home runs, and 31 RBIs. Additionally, he has stolen 14 bases to this point and is a top 100 player in Roto formats. Since June 23rd, he has stolen six bases and should keep that pace going. Not to mention, he has multiple games of two steals as well.
Eduardo Escobar, 3B, Los Angeles Angels
The Mets traded Eduardo Escobar to the Los Angeles Angels. In his first four games as an Angel, he went 6 for 16 with 5 runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a triple. Escobar has started off hot with his time in Los Angeles and is someone to keep an eye on in deeper fantasy baseball formats.
Waiver Wire Pitchers
Domingo German, SP, New York Yankees
We have to lead off the pitchers with Domingo German. He threw the 24th Perfect Game in MLB history (25th if a play at first base in Detroit was accurately called). German was perfect against the Athletics on Tuesday night. Before his perfect game, his last two combined starts were really bad. He combined 5.1 innings and 15 hits allowed. During that time, he gave up a combined 17 runs. Then, he goes out and throws a perfect game.
German is a two-start pitcher next week at home against Baltimore and the Cubs. He is sitting on a 4.54 ERA currently with 78 strikeouts in 81.1 innings. His WHIP, however, is really good at 1.05. Despite the ups and downs, he’s certainly worth an add off the waiver wire after that performance.
Bryan Woo, SP, Seattle Mariners
This is likely the last call on waivers for Bryan Woo. He doesn’t have the flashiest numbers, but he has been improving. He is sitting on a 4.37 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 22.2 innings of work with a run and only six walks. Moving forward, Woo is lined up to face the Giants on the road and Houston on the road next. Overall, Woo is a great source of strikeouts at the moment and someone worth looking at on the waiver wire.
Kolby Allard, SP, Atlanta Braves
Kolby Allard got the spot start on Wednesday against the Twins. He pitched 4.2 innings of no-run ball with eight strikeouts. While AJ Smith-Shawver was sent down, Allard got the call-up and looked really decent on the mound. The big question remains will he stay in the rotation, it seems, as of now, that he should stick around for another start in the rotation.
Osvaldo Bido, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates
Osvaldo Bido is on the radar with three starts going 15.2 innings and posting a 3.45 ERA. He has 18 strikeouts and a quality start so far. Next, he lines up to face the Brewers at home, then on the road against the Dodgers the following week.
As it seems right now, Bido is locked into the starting rotation. He is not necessarily a must-add, but he’s someone to keep an eye on in deeper leagues. Additionally, he has not given up more than three runs in each of his three starts so far. Granted, it’s a small sample size, but so far so good.
Mike Soroka, SP, Atlanta Braves
Mike Soroka is being called up to start Friday 6/30. His major league numbers are nothing great at the moment, with an 8.38 ERA, 1.86 WHIP, and only five strikeouts. However, he did impress in his few starts in AAA, giving the Braves optimism it’ll carry over to the majors. Soroka has not been healthy for several years, but if he can put together a stretch of good starts, he may be worth an add in deeper formats.
Tarik Skubal, SP, Detroit Tigers
Tarik Skubal is coming close to his debut this season and should be added in any fantasy league where he might be on the waiver wire. He is in line for a two-start week coming up, with his first start being against the Athletics. Will he go deep into the game? Likely not. However, he has the chance to immediately put up good numbers against the Athletics.
Minor League Player to Stash
For this week, the minor league stash to keep an eye on is Endy Rodriguez, catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. With Henry Davis being promoted, and seemingly playing in the outfield, it opens room for Rodriguez to get playing time. If you play in a two-catcher league and need a second catcher, this is someone to keep an eye on for when he gets promoted.
