Fantasy Football Outlook for 2023

All of a sudden, 2023 is looking like the year of the wide receivers. You’ll see drafts with only a handful of running backs coming off the board in the first round. Whether this is due to the unpredictability we’ve seen in recent years or the running back market. Likely, it’s a combination of different reasons, but either way, it’s just the way things have been trending. Needless to say, we’re seeing a ton of value at the running back position for the 2023 fantasy football season.

As you check out our fantasy football rankings, White is typically a low-end RB2 across the board. At times, you might even see him as a high-end RB3. As of July 16th, White is the RB25 on Underdog Fantasy

For the 2023 season, White has a clear path to production and should see plenty of volume. After releasing veteran running back Leonard Fournette, this backfield is barren outside of White. Undrafted rookie Sean Tucker may end up making the roster. Additionally, the only other “notable” names to mention are Chase Edmonds and Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Notably, Vaughn has just 91 total touches in his first three seasons in the league and isn’t a threat at this point. Edmonds however will likely get some touches, but don’t expect anything significant.

2022 Buccaneers Backfield

Last year, the backfield in Tampa Bay was split with Fournette and White. Not a single running back for the Buccaneers topped 4 YPC and honestly, Fournette just looked slow. On the other hand, White looked explosive and very quick with the ball in his hands. In the end, it makes sense that Fournette was released given their contract situations and White looking the way he did.

2023 Projections

All things considered, White should be viewed as a low-end RB2 for fantasy football purposes. However, that really is his absolute floor all things considered. Personally, I’m projecting White to get just over 200 carries this year and right at 1,000 rushing yards. Additionally, I’d bank on 6-8 rushing touchdowns as he’ll more than likely get the bulk of the red zone work.

As for the receiving game, I’d expect 75 targets as his absolute ceiling. Last year he saw 58 targets, despite Fournette being fourth in the NFL in targets for all running backs. White himself was 14th in targets last year. However, moving forward with likely Baker Mayfield at the quarterback position, I wouldn’t expect quite as many check downs.

Overall, at his current price tag, White is looking like a fantastic value at the running back position. Low-end RB2 is looking like the absolute floor for White for the 2023 season. If you find yourself loading up on wide receivers early on, White is a great running back to target in the next few rounds of your upcoming fantasy football drafts.

Dynasty Football Outlook

If you’re looking past just the 2023 season, the outlook for White is much less promising. White has third-round draft capitol and there’s a good chance this team is rebuilding moving forward. However, all of the Buccaneers’ moves this past offseason have indicated that they are trying to win now. It’s an interesting situation as they could easily end up fighting for 1st in this division or being in the Caleb Williams sweepstakes if things go south.

In your dynasty fantasy football leagues, White is worth holding or buying at his current price. According to KTC, he is the RB23 overall. That’s behind rookie Zach Charbonnet, Cam Akers, and Miles Sanders. All of which, I’d gladly sell for White straight up. In dynasty leagues, winning now tends to get a bit overlooked. White will help you win now and likely will be leading this backfield for the next couple of seasons.
