USFL – Week 2 Breakdown and Rankings

jonathan-adams-usfl-week-3-outlook

We now have two weeks of data to work with for the USFL. Starting to get some things figured out and a little bit better of an idea of who will be the top guys for each team and more important fantasy-relevant players.

Stallions

QB – After replacing injured McGough in Week 1, J’Mar Smith continued to shine and prove to be a valuable fantasy option for us. He threw 30 times and tacked on eight rush attempts as well. Smith will be a top quarterback option for us moving forward.

RB – TBJ and Marable basically split snaps 50/50 this week. Marable did get more attempts, 16-9. Both backs were efficient as they both had over 60 yards and each had two receptions. Marable also punched in a touchdown. I like Marable as a decent fantasy option moving forward. The 50/50 snap split is not ideal, but him getting a lot more touches is nice.

WR/TE – Stallions are still really heavy on the same three wide receivers. Bolden is the clear number 1 with 21 targets through two weeks. Mitchell is a very good option as well. He is the number two on the team but still getting a lot of work. Marlon Williams is the third guy. You can definitely consider him in stacks with this team. Wiliams also scored a 64-yard touchdown so he can score from anywhere on the field. Angeline got less work this week. Two wide receivers got a few snaps and fullback Bobby Holly got a significant amount of work as well.

Short List

QB – Smith

RB – Marable

WR/TE – Bolden and Mitchell (Top 2), Williams, Angeline (Low owned/GPP possible plays)

Generals

QB – Still a situation we are going to avoid. Perez and Johnson are splitting snaps.

RB – Trey Williams got over 60% of the running back snaps here again. Victor did rush two more times than Williams but did not get any receiving work.  Williams got four targets. That’s nine targets for him through two weeks along with 21 carries. Victor, however, happened to punch in a touchdown. Williams is the back I want to target in this offense.

WR/TE – After not doing anything in Week 1, most likely due to his hamstring injury, Shepherd emerged as the Generals’ WR1 well over Satterfield who lit it up in Week 1. Satterfield appears to be the second option for the Generals although he didn’t have much production. Alonzo Moore is the team’s third option. The Generals tight end, Brandom did get four targets and played a lot of the snaps but he isn’t someone I am targeting. This offense isn’t great so I probably wouldn’t play much other than Shepherd from this wide receiver core right now.

Gamblers

QB – If awful quarterback play is something you are into, look no further than the Gamblers. Thorson flat-out stinks and when they replaced him for a few snaps with Bahar, he wasn’t any better. The only thing I’m targeting here with these quarterbacks is their opponent’s defense because Thorson loves to throw the ball to them.

RB – A very big bright spot for this team is Mark Thompson. This guy is a beast and rightfully saw his snaps increase to 66% and most of the passing work for this team. He didn’t have any targets and probably should moving forward. Thompson is averaging 5.7 YPC so far on 29 carries. If his team wasn’t so awful on offense we would see him score some touchdowns because he has yet to find the end zone although it is just a matter of time.

WR/TE – In Week 1, Zuber and Ward played over 90% of the snaps, Ratliff-Williams played  40% and tight end Barnes played 82%, while Tyler Simmons was inactive. In Week 2, Ward was inactive, Simmons and Zuber played over 90% of snaps, Ratliff-Williams and Palka played around 50%, and Barnes dropped to 61%. Zuber and Simmons are the two worth considering or even Ward if he plays instead of Simmons again. I want to avoid these guys for the most part but one of them can probably get there for us if they catch a touchdown.

Panthers

QB – Patterson has thrown the ball a decent amount both weeks with 26 and 29 attempts. He did not look very good in Week 2 at all after looking decent in Week 1.

RB – This three-headed RB committee is one you should be avoiding. If you are dying to play one of these backs, you can play Scarlett as he seems to be the one with receiving upside.

WR/TE – Lenoir remained the number one option in his second week with nine targets. Devin Ross is still the number two guy. Both of these wideouts had over 90% of the snaps. The Panthers love tight ends and play three a significant amount. I don’t really want to target them though, I’d avoid this group if possible.

Stars

QB – Bryan Scott is definitely one of the top quarterbacks in this league if not the top. Sloter and him are close. He has thrown the ball 36 times in each game so far this year. He also has four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He is a top quarterback option for us in fantasy

RB – Holland got hurt during the game and Colburn was inactive this week allowing Paul Terry to play 64% of the snaps. He had eight rush attempts and garnered four targets. We will have to pay attention to injury news to see what to do with the running back situation here. A pass-happy team like this makes me lean to avoid this backfield possibly.

WR/TE – Gray and Rowland were out for this game which allowed for Overton, Suell, and Alexander to play 100% of the Stars’ routes for wide receivers. This also led the way for Bug Howard to play 82% of the snaps as well. This is definitely a place we will want to target in fantasy but we will need to see injury news to determine what we want to do with them.

Maulers

QB – Love was a big positive for this team that in Week 1 looked atrocious and went in wanting to pound the ball. This week Love threw a whopping 39 times. He wasn’t efficient but he had over 200 yards and threw two touchdowns. Maybe we can consider him if he keeps chucking the ball around as he did in Week 2. Week 3 should have a good game script for him this week to pass a lot.

RB – Still a split backfield, but less of one this week. In Week 2, Groshek out-carried London 18 to 10. You can definitely play Groshek moving forward.

WR – Hardaway and Gaither through two weeks have been the most used wide receivers on this team. Gaither has balled out so far and I do like him as a fantasy option. You can consider Hardaway if you want as well.

Breakers

QB – Sloter, aka the number one quarterback in the league, has been great so far. He has thrown the ball over 36 times in each game so far. That’s even with them absolutely demolishing the Bandits and him not having to pass as much. Play him in DFS and you’ll be happy.

RB – Split backfield here with Ellis out-carrying Logan 21 to 10 as the game script called for this and Logan saw five targets to Ellis’s one. You really can play either back in this offense, but I like Logan a bit better because of the passing volume. Let’s hope future Breakers games stay a little closer so Logan can get a little more work.

WR/TE – Despite getting injured in Week 1 Jonathan Adams still put up respectable numbers. After that, he had 10 targets in Week 2 and saw over 100 air yards. Adams is shaping up to be the best wide receiver in this league. Sloter loves him and we are going to see this connection continue moving forward. There are a lot of other options on this team that you can consider as well. I’d put Dixon as the WR2, Poindexter as the WR3, and Taylor as the WR4. You can play any of these guys along with Sal Canella the tight end in GPPs.

Bandits

QB – I’ve been disappointed in Ta’amu so far this year. I thought he would be a top quarterback in the league and has been anything but that. Maybe he rebounds, which he probably does, but right now I have a hard time wanting to play him in DFS.

RB – The running back split was a lot closer this week for the Bandits. Emmons is still the man and will be someone we look at targeting in fantasy. It was a bad game script for him so that allowed Washington to get a lot more work than he normally would.

WR/TE – The Bandits have a very spread-out wide receiver core. Lasley is the WR1 for this offense, he had five targets and over 100 air yards, but unfortunately did not make a catch. O’Grady came back to earth this week after a baller Week 1 performance. Look for him to bounce back in Week 3.  Franklin got a big chunk of the wide receiver snaps so that’s something to keep an eye on moving forward.
