4 Early NFL Free Agency Winners

NFL Free Agency has arrived. In this article, I will reveal my Top 4 Early NFL Free Agency Winners for 2022 through the first two days of the extravaganza.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars

I am all over the Jaguars through the first two days of NFL Free Agency. The Jags were by far the most active team, which was needed.

Teams can fill needs by signing bodies without necessarily upgrading at those spots. However, the Jaguars managed to both fill needs while upgrading.

Before the craziness of free agency, I projected the Jaguars as a sleeper team to win Super Bowl 57 as I did the same with the Cardinals last offseason around this time.

You can read that piece here.

We know how the Cards fared. At one point they were the best team in the NFL before Kyler Murray‘s seemingly perennial second-half collapse.

Can the Jags do the same? They are off to a great start, adding WR Christian Kirk, WR Zay Jones, OG Brandon Scherff, TE Evan Engram, LB Foyesade Oluokun, DL, and Folorunso Fatukasi.

The Jaguars made vast upgrades on both sides of the ball, primarily at pass catcher and the offensive line to help Trevor Lawrence. They also added sound pieces to the middles of their defense.

The Jags aren’t done yet. Look for Doug Pederson and Trent Baalke to continue to make moves to bolster the team in its entirety to compete in, and win an inferior AFC South.

2. Cincinnati Bengals

While the Bengals may have lost TE C.J. Uzomah to the Jets, their offense is better today than it was in Super Bowl 56. Cincinnati considerably strengthened the interior of their offensive line by signing C Ted Karras and G Alex Cappa.

They will start in Week 1 protecting Joe Burrow and opening up the running lanes for Joe Mixon.

The Bengals knew their offensive line was the reason why they couldn’t secure a Super Bowl 56 victory. Entering the offseason with the third-most cap space, they attacked their glaring weakness.

Look for the Bengals to also upgrade at tight end in the wake of the aforementioned Uzomah departure. They will also make moves to get better on the back end of their defense.

Although the Bengals placed the franchise tag on playmaking safety Jessie Bates, they must add depth to the second-biggest hole on their team.

3. Los Angeles Chargers

I absolutely love what the Chargers are doing. While they made a trade to acquire LB Khalil Mack last week, they weren’t done upgrading a horrendous defense that cost them a playoff berth in 2021.

HC Brandon Staley is a defensive mind who can put a top 5 unit on the field when he has top ends talent. Similar to the Bengals, the Chargers also attacked their greatest needs.

In addition to Mack, the Chargers signed DT Austin Johnson, DT Sebastian Joseph-Day, and the biggest splash of all, CB J.C. Jackson.

Jackson picked off eight passes in 2021 while the Chargers defense in its entirely intercepted seven.

While Mack is no longer the player he was a few years ago, look for him to reignite his career in Los Angeles. With Joey Bosa commanding the double team, we could see Mack run wild and reach 10+ sacks for the first time since 2018.

Johnson and Day will bolster a Chargers’ run defense that was one of the worst units in the NFL last season.

The Chargers are a better team today and it’s not close.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers are winners purely for the fact that they are getting Tom Brady back under center for another Super Bowl run. However, it’s not just Brady.

The Bucs also franchise-tagged WR Chris Godwin while retaining C Ryan Jensen and CB Carlton Davis.

It is early, but the Bucs still have some work to do. They lose G Alex Cappa to the Bengals which is a significant blow to Brady’s protection.

Tampa also needs to figure out how to lure TE Rob Gronkwoski and RB Leonard Fournette back to the club. While it may be easy to do so, nothing is a lock.

The Buccaneers also have a slew of free agents to deal with. TE O.J. Howard, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, Ndamukong Suh, and DB Jordan Whitehead, just to name a few.

Still, the difference that Brady, Godwin, Jensen, and Davis will make is enough to call the Buccaneers winners as they begin their push to emerge on top of a frail NFC.
