7 Bounce-Back Candidates for Fantasy Football in 2023

Several NFL players will make a significant comeback in the upcoming season. These individuals faced challenges and setbacks in the past but are determined to reclaim their former glory. They already possess the talent to be elite players in the NFL, yet they didn’t capture it fully last season. Additionally, if they stay healthy and perform to their known potential, they can be major factors in their team’s success in 2023.

Factors such as a change in the coaching staff, a healthy offseason, or a change in scenery can contribute to their bounce-back season. NFL fans eagerly anticipate witnessing players bounce back from disappointing seasons, providing hope for their teams and giving fans something to cheer about. This article will explore the paths to redemption for seven players.

In fantasy football drafts, these comeback candidates have the potential for significant returns on the draft cost. Furthermore, they present intriguing opportunities to turn the tides of a dynasty team’s overall value. I will be citing real dynasty trades alongside each player to give you an idea of prices on the general market.

Quarterbacks

Justin Herbert, LA Chargers

2022 QB17 in points per game (16.1)

Despite facing various injuries to both himself and his receiving group, Herbert showcased exceptional skills and poise as a quarterback in 2022. His most admirable showing came early on in the season, Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs. During this game, Herbert took a massive blow to his ribs. The blow took him out of the game briefly before he returned to throw this frozen rope.

Additionally, the Los Angeles Chargers have made efforts to improve their offensive weaponry by providing Herbert with one of the more polarizing rookies in Quentin Johnston. As a result of this and a full offseason to recover, Herbert should be firmly in line to retake his chair at the high table of elite passers.

Real Trades:
  • Derek Carr, 2023 1.01, and  2023 2.03 for Herbert
  • Geno Smith and Amon-Ra St. Brown for Herbert
  • Jared Goff, Tee Higgins, and a 2025 1st for Herbert

Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns

2022 QB23 in points per game (14.1)

Deshaun Watson has the potential to be a remarkable bounce-back candidate. Despite the off-field controversies surrounding him, Watson possesses undeniable talent as a quarterback. If he can continue to keep his legal issues behind him, he has the opportunity to reclaim his status as one of the league’s elite signal-callers.

With his early years being defined by exceptional accuracy, athleticism, and ability to read defenses, Watson has consistently demonstrated the skills necessary to excel in the NFL. All signals coming from the Browns pointing towards a pass-heavy offense, including adding receivers Elijah Moore via trade and Cedric Tillman in the draft. Watson will be given ample chances to retake his mantle as a top fantasy option.

Real Trades:

Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos

2022 QB20 in points per game (14.7)

After what can only be described as one of the larger letdowns of 2022, Russell Wilson yet has the potential to rebound. This is especially true as he is now under the leadership of renowned coach Sean Payton. Wilson could benefit from a fresh start in a new system under Payton, who is known for his offensive creativity and ability to maximize quarterback talent.

Payton’s success in developing quarterbacks such as Drew Brees speaks for itself. They could form a formidable partnership with Payton’s offensive prowess and Wilson’s exceptional skill set, reigniting Wilson’s performance.

Furthermore, joining the Broncos this offseason are the likes of Mike McGlinchey at tackle and rookie receiver Marvin Mims. All in all, Wilson, Payton, and the Broncos have the potential to create a mile-high monster both on the turf and in our fantasy lineups

Real Trades:
  • 2023 2.01 and a 2024 3rd for Wilson
  • Mac Jones and a 2023 2nd for Wilson
  • Zach Charbonnet and 2023 2.10 for Wilson

Running Backs

Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers

2022 RB19 in points per game (13)

With another year of experience under his belt, Harris now has the opportunity to make significant strides in his third season. His size, agility, and versatility as a route runner make him a valuable asset in both the running and passing game.

Harris can find more running lanes and showcase his elusiveness and power with better chemistry with his offensive line. On the coattails of a mediocre season marred by a nagging lisfranc injury, Harris seems far removed from his rookie year.

With his health returned to him, and another year for Kenny Pickett to develop as a passer, it is not unreasonable for Harris to return to the top of the totem pole as a volume-based top 5 running back.

Real Trades:
  • AJ Dillon and 2023 1.09 for Harris
  • Kenneth Walker and two 2024 2nds for Harris and Chris Godwin
  • Sean Tucker and a 2024 1st for Harris

Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

2022 RB20 in points per game (13)

The entirety of this past season was let down for the Colts. The high hopes of Matt Ryan bringing a veteran presence of stability and consistency did not turn out well, as his career ended with a sputter of injuries and disappointment.

However, the future here is bright. This is due to a new head coach in Shane Steichen, and rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. While having a mobile quarterback usually is met with concerns of fewer dump-off passes, Taylor was not reliant on those to reach his ceiling, to begin with. In his RB1 season in 2021, he had only 50 targets.

With the increased efficiency that a read-option offense brings to the rushing attack, an already efficient rusher such as Taylor should be able to thrive. He might just be in the running for RB1 yet again.

Real Trades:
  • Kenneth Walker and DK Metcalf for Taylor and a 2024 1st
  • Cam Akers and a 2024 1st for Taylor
  • David Njoku, 2023 1.06, and 2023 2.06 for Taylor

Wide Receivers

Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers

2022 WR30 in points per game (12.7)

Deebo Samuel has the potential to be a major steal in 2023. Despite dealing with injuries and inconsistencies in his first few seasons, Samuel has shown flashes of brilliance as a dynamic playmaker for the San Francisco 49ers. He possesses a rare combination of speed, strength, and versatility that allows him to excel as both a receiver and a ball carrier. The prime example of this was his 2021 campaign in which he put up 1,770 total yards and 15 touchdowns. Highlights of that season are below.

Samuel’s skills can also be fully utilized by the offensive scheme of the 49ers, which is renowned for Kyle Shanahan’s innovative play-calling and emphasis on using versatile weapons. Samuel has the potential to have an exceptional campaign in 2023. Additionally, he can reestablish himself as one of the top playmakers in the NFL if he can stay healthy and play consistently.

Real Trades:
  • Samaje Perine, Antonio Gibson, and a 2024 3rd for Samuel
  • 2023 1.08 for Samuel
  • Rachaad White and 2023 2.06 for Samuel and 2023 3.09

Tight Ends

Darren Waller, New York Giants

2022 TE10 in points per game (9.4)

Waller’s athleticism, size, and route-running make him a defensive nightmare. Yet, injuries, defensive adjustments, and offensive changes have affected his recent production. If he stays healthy and quickly builds rapport with Daniel Jones and the coaching staff, he can reach new heights.

Brian Daboll’s experience and potential continued improvements in the team’s offensive approach may create more opportunities for Waller to showcase his skills and regain his previous high level of production. This would enhance Waller’s impact on both the Giants roster, and our fantasy squads.

Real Trades:
  • Michael Thomas and Zay Jones for Waller
  • Isaiah Likely and 2023 2.09 for Waller and a 2024 2nd
  • Chigoziem Okonkwo and 2023 3.01 for Waller

In conclusion, the 2023 NFL season holds great promise for these standout players. Whether it’s Herbert’s resurgence under a new regime, Watson’s full return, Wilson’s persistent leadership, Harris and Taylor’s running abilities, Samuel’s dynamic playmaking, or Waller’s ability to present as a matchup nightmare, these players have what it takes to overcome hurdles and deliver exceptional performances. I believe that I can speak for us all when I say that we are looking forward to seeing these players reclaim their places among the league’s elite.
