Dynasty Buys and Sells: Quarterbacks
The season is just around the corner, and now is a great time to get into some players worth buying or selling in your dynasty leagues. Whether you’re trying to win now or in an all-out rebuild, buying and selling is a never-ending cycle in dynasty leagues. Staying on top of player values as they rise and fall can be the difference between a championship and another year to be forgotten. Let’s get right into it with these Dynasty Buys and Sells: Quarterbacks.
Buys
Zach Wilson – New York Jets
Between free agency and the NFL Draft, no quarterback in my mind is a bigger winner than Zach Wilson. Bolstering the offensive line with Laken Tomlinson and signing tight ends C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin was a great start to the offseason, but the draft was the icing on the cake.
Drafting Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, and Jeremy Ruckert are great pieces to add around the 2020 No.2 overall pick. With the tandem, for now, in Hall and Michael Carter, to the wide receivers of Elijah Moore, Wilson, and Corey Davis, the Jets are doing all they can to help Wilson succeed. Seeing Wilson as QB18 on Fantasy Pros consensus dynasty rankings is just screaming to buy him now. If I can get a back-end QB2 at an affordable price who should put up high-end QB2 numbers with the weapons around him, I can’t say no to that at all. In Superflex, I would be willing to go as high as a late-first round, but if you can get him for a second or later, consider yourself lucky for getting a steal. – Ryan Miner
Jalen Hurts – Philadelphia Eagles
Jalen Hurts has major breakout potential in year three. He’s a great dynasty quarterback with a nice floor based on his rushing upside. Last season, he rushed for 784 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Eagles traded for AJ Brown during the NFL Draft. That’s an elite weapon at his disposal. If Hurts can improve as a passer this season he could be a Top-10 fantasy quarterback with Top-5 upside. I’d be looking to buy him in dynasty leagues before the real breakout happens and he takes a major leap. – Steve Stoughton
Jameis Winston – New Orleans Saints
First off, I don’t believe for a second that Drew Brees might return to this roster any time soon, despite some speculation floating around. This is Jameis Winston‘s team for the upcoming 2022 season. With that being cleared up, I am absolutely buying into Winston this year. Look at the weapons around him in the returning Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry being signed, and the drafting of Chris Olave.
Then you have Alvin Kamara coming out of the backfield and a solid tight end in Adam Trautman. The Saints have arguably some of the best offensive group of weapons in the league. While Winston didn’t put up huge numbers in his injury-shortened 2021 season with only 167.1 yards per game in seven starts, he did show improvement in decreasing turnovers with a 14:3 touchdown to interception ratio. If he’s available, I’m buying Winston this year. – Brendan O’Bryan
Kirk Cousins – Minnesota Vikings
The ultimate goal in any dynasty league is to win, obviously. Despite some dynasty managers often forget that and are more concerned about rebuilding. Anyway, is your team ready to win now? Are you just a quarterback shy of obtaining that coveted league title? Look no further because Kirk Cousins is here to make your dreams come true.
Sure, he’s no spring chicken. He doesn’t need to be. Cousins is the most disrespected quarterback in fantasy football even though he has finished as a QB1 more often than not in his career as a starter. Just look at his weapons. Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, Dalvin Cook, Irv Smith Jr., and K.J. Osborn.
In his seven seasons as a starting quarterback in the NFL, Cousins has only failed to reach 4,000 passing yards once. He has thrown for 30 or more touchdown passes in three of the last four seasons and his quarterback rating has been over 103 for three straight years. He’s not going to be the #1 quarterback in fantasy, but he’s going to put up great numbers over and over again. Because of his age, which he’ll be 34 in August, he’s a cheap get in dynasty leagues and you should get him now. – Benjamin Ditlevson

Sells
Trey Lance – San Francisco 49ers
I’ll start this one off by simply saying this: I just don’t see it or get it. Sure, Trey Lance has the talent, but on the football field, I just don’t see the high value that he brings. Yeah, he has the arm, and the legs, but to rank him as a Top-10 quarterback in a dynasty over Hurts, Matthew Stafford, and even Trevor Lawerence has got me scratching my head.
Lance started a couple of games last year because of Jimmy Garoppolo missing time with an injury, but that’s really it. Even having Garoppolo ranked outside of the Top-32 for quarterbacks is laughable. Who couldn’t start over Garoppolo last year? Who will more than likely start Week 1 and probably going forward the rest of the season? There’s still a decent chance it’s Garoppolo.
I do like what Lance could do in the NFL and flashes of what he’s shown, but it just looks like it’s not quite there. At least not yet. I am doing it right now if I can sell high on Lance. His value is insane and you’re paying a premium right now as he’s already being treated like the starter and a very nice fantasy option. Getting a WR1 or an RB1 back in return is an easy acceptance in my mind. – Ryan Miner
Justin Fields – Chicago Bears
This is not a knock on Justin Fields at all as I feel like he has all the talent and tools to be a successful quarterback in this league. This is all about the team the Bears have put around him. In his second NFL season, he’s seeing his second coach, offensive coordinator, and offensive system. This upheaval and change are never good for a young quarterback. Also, they got rid of Allen Robinson without bringing in a clear-cut replacement. Long-term Fields still might be fine, but things are not looking good right now. The Bears aren’t doing much of anything to help their young quarterback and the price is getting too high for me, all things considered. – Brendan O’Bryan
Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs
Bare with me here for a moment. What if we’ve already seen Patrick Mahomes‘ peak? He took over as the starter in 2018 when he threw for 5,097 passing yards and 50 touchdowns. A ridiculous start. Since then, his completion percentage has gone down in every season. In 2021, he threw a career-high 13 interceptions and a career-low 7.4 yards per attempt.
Now, with Tyreek Hill in Miami, he will enter the upcoming season with a mostly new band of characters to throw to. He’s still got the uber-reliable Travis Kelce, but how many years of dominance does the stalwart tight end have left? This might be the last chance to cash in on Mahomes if things go badly for the Chiefs in 2022. With all the competition in the division, I’d be looking to cash that ticket before it is eclipsed.
As with all buy or sell articles, you don’t need to go out of your way to sell Mahomes. That being said, in leagues such as Superflex or 2QB leagues, you can still get virtually any player of your choice for someone like Mahomes. It’s worth considering. – Benjamin Ditlevson
