Dynasty Fantasy Football Sells Before the NFL Draft

Dynasty-fantasy-football-Sells-Before-the-NFL-Draft

With the 2023 NFL Draft right around the corner, now is a good time to look over your dynasty fantasy football rosters. While it may be hard for you to sell some of your higher assets, it’s good to look at the big picture. We think we know what NFL teams are going to do before, during, and after the NFL Draft, but we don’t.

Here in this article, I am giving you six players that I am selling in dynasty fantasy football leagues as we head into draft weekend.

Sell High – Trey Lance

Ever since being the No.3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Trey Lance has not lived up to expectations. While he has appeared in four NFL games going into 2023 he has a lot of red flags. While coming into the NFL as a raw talent landing in the perfect landing spots for quarterbacks, Lance hasn’t taken the step we all hoped. Yes, last year he was injured, but still, the excuses are getting to be a little much.

As we get closer to the NFL Draft, rumors are going around that Lance could be traded. The 49ers rode then-rookie quarterback Brock Purdy all the way to the NFC Championship game. Additionally, the 49ers also signed Sam Darnold to compete with Lance as Brock Purdy recovers from shoulder surgery.

While most will tell you we haven’t seen enough of Lance to call him a bust, I’m ready to. The 49ers want Purdy and Darnold to be the quarterbacks here and are ready to move on from Lance. Per KTC (keeptradecut.com)in Superflex leagues, you can trade for as little as a late 2023 first or players like Jerry Jeudy, Brandon Aiyuk, or Nick Chubb.

While most of us drafted Lance with a top-3 pick a couple of years ago, it’s time to get what you can. As a once wise man, Matthew Berry has said, “I’d rather be out a year early than a year late”.

Joe Mixon

This is not only a risky sell, but a very risky buy for someone. Rumors have been going around about Joe Mixon being a cap-casualty. His 2023 salary is $9.4M, with a $5.5M dead cap if he’s released. Furthermore, Mixon also has had aggravated menacing charges reapplied to him.

These red flags alone can make the Bengals organization as a whole move on from Mixon. Additionally, there are plenty of free-agent running backs available, and the NFL Draft is right around the corner. The Bengals currently hold the 28th, 60th, and 92nd pick in the upcoming draft and I wouldn’t be surprised if they take someone of value to replace Mixon.

Now to the good sell side of Mixon. Mixon averaged 15.6 PPR fantasy points, good for an RB1 finish (RB6 overall). He had a career year with 60 receptions (75 targets) for 441 yards and two touchdowns. While, his inefficiency in the running game (210 carries, 814 yards, seven touchdowns; 3.9 YPC) was hidden by his receiving game. IF all is cleared, Mixon could be in for a solid year in Cincinnati, but if not. Well, I can say I warned you.

Currently, Mixon is listed as the RB18 on Fantasy Pros. I would take a mid-2nd round pick or even trade straight up for Jimmy Garoppolo in Superflex dynasty fantasy football leagues.

Dameon Pierce

The Houston Texans looked like they struck gold when they drafted Dameon Pierce in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Pierce was the offense of a bad Texans team carrying the ball 220 times for 939 yards (4.3 YPC) and four touchdowns. Add to that 30 receptions (39 targets) for another 165 yards and a touchdown. Although Pierce finished second among rookie running backs (Kenneth Walker was first), his overall efficiency was not great.

While Pierce saw on average 19 touches per game, he finished as RB27. Coupled with taking the games he missed and extrapolating it over 17 games, Pierce finishes no better than RB15. Let’s also not forget this was all under the old coaching regime of Lovie Smith

Rather than continuing with Lovie Smith and continuing to build this team up, the Texans fired him and hired 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. Before Ryans took over this backfield was full of has-beens and never was players. Additionally, the Texans signed former Bills running back Devin Singletary to a one-year contract while also adding Mike Boone. Already, it does not look like a threat to Pierce but is an upgrade to what was currently there.

Furthermore, the Texans hold 11 draft picks in the upcoming draft, two of them being 3rd rounders. Although I still see Pierce being the lead back, I don’t trust him as the RB17 per Fantasy Pros dynasty rankings. With all these things in play, sell him now as I see the Texans drafting another running back. Per KTC you can trade Pierce for players like D’Andre Swift or Calvin Ridley. Then again, if you’re a rebuilding team you could look to get 1.11, late 2024 1st, or even 2025 1st. Either of these deals, I’m willing to make.

Mike Evans

Now you may look at this and say “No, duh”. Mike Evans may be one of the most obvious sells. If you can sell him Great! If not, well at least you tried and you just ride it out until he has a big week. Every year, he seems to make some of these “bust” or “sell-high” lists, and he continues to prove everyone wrong. Now, he gets either Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask. If there was a year for him to break his 1,000+ yard season streaks, this would be it.

As Evans heads into his age-30 season, he’s been heading in a fantasy decline over the last couple of seasons. Saved by double-digit touchdowns, without them Evans would have been bench depth at best. Now with Mayfield expected to be the starter for the Buccaneers and Evans’ downturn shall continue. Mayfield has never supported a receiver like Evans during his time in the NFL

Furthermore, no wide receiver playing under Mayfield has surpassed six touchdowns. Although both Odell Beckham Jr. (1,035 yards) and Jarvis Landry (1,174 yards) had good receiving yards in 2019 under Mayfield, they combined for 10 touchdowns. Mayfield’s game isn’t for Evans, it’s better suited for Chris Godwin. If you’re able to get a second-round pick, I’m accepting that all day.

Garrett Wilson

While most of you will say he’s a buy, you are the reason why I’m selling. Garrett Wilson’s fantasy stock is sky-high after he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. His current ADP on FFPC 21 (WR10) despite finishing the 2022 season as the WR21, averaging 12.7 PPR fantasy points per game. With the envision of Aaron Rodgers, Wilson’s value has never been so high.

The Jets recently signed Allen Lazard, Rodgers former No.1 adding another receiver to the mix. Furthermore, how long will Wilson have Rodgers on the team before the future Hall of Famer calls it quits? Here alone is why I’m selling Wilson at peak value. Flipping Wilson now at max value is a must.

T.J. Hockenson

Hockenson finished as the TE2 last season and no better time to sell him than now! Between his time with the Lions to being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, Hockenson finished with career-highs in targets (129), receptions (86), and yards (914). Hockenson tied his total in touchdowns (six) which also helped boost him to finish well behind the TE1 Travis Kelce. For now, he’s being drafted as the TE4 in dynasty startups.

As we look at his weekly finishes, his average weekly finish was TE15. Furthermore, once he was traded to the Vikings, his overall weekly finish stayed the same! So how did he finish as TE2? He had two explosive weeks where he put up 39.9 and 35.9 PPR points, good for 35% of his total fantasy output.

Even though Hockenson scored 10-plus PPR points in 50% of his games, he averaged 6.2 PPR points in the rest of them. Overall, he’s still above the TE1 average per the Consistency Score, but he was nothing more than a serviceable tight end. If you can get a mid-first-round pick, Josh Jacobs, or Dallas Goedert plus a pick, that’s a deal I’m taking all day.
